Better News from Inwood
« on: November 08, 2012, 08:52:01 PM »
I received a garbled report last week while in New Zealand that Inwood C.C. had sustained significant damage from Hurricane Sandy.

I'm happy to report that I didn't get the full story correctly.  The course did take on a lot of seawater, and a lot of the irrigation system was damaged as a result.  But the grass seems to have survived the hit reasonably well and they look forward to getting the course back into playable shape for next spring.

Just wanted to correct my earlier report and wish them well.  They are authentic New Yorkers, and New Yorkers are tough when the going is tough.

Tom-  a buddy of mine is a member and he wrote me back this note:

" Went to the Inwood club the other day and it's a mess.  Locker rooms and bag rooms were under water.  Awnings down along with lots of trees.  The ocean flooded much of the course and since it's salt water it will take some time to fix.  I guess the club will be back to almost normal by the early spring."

Tom,

Inwood probably sits below the runways at next door JFK on Jamaica Bay, so they just have been several feet under water with the surge.

With sub-freezing temperatures and snow accumulating on grass recently submerged under salt water you have to wonder if it will survive with no side effects.

Pat:

I'm assured by the superintendent that they will be okay, though that is not to understate the amount of work they have in front of them.

The majority of the course sits at elevation 5 to 12 feet above sea level, all of which would have gone underwater at peak high tide.  Only the small hill at the eastern end of the course (8th green, 11th green, 17th green and that area) would have stayed dry.

We haven't heard anything from the club yet.  Don't know if they even have power back.

inwood member here. course and facilities suffered some damage but nothing so egregious given what is going on around us and what not. we lost no holes or land.  i only hope nearby courses that are even closer to the water (lido, middlebay) were just as lucky.

Good news.  I guess that going in and lifting all the lower fairways 4-5 feet as part of our renovation has paid some dividends this year.
