Southside Chicago Student Build 3-Hole Golf Course
« on: October 21, 2009, 01:23:18 PM »
Below is an article that illustrates a really cool project here in Chicago.

http://www.southtownstar.com/neighborhoodstar/evergreenpark/1837061,102109golfcourse.article

The amazing part of the story is the sense of community that the golf course has given the students as each had a hand in building and maintaining the course. The best part about the 3-hole loop? Multiple sets of tees giving the option for muliple playing angles on repeat plays and...it's free.

There needs to be more projects like this in order to allow for Golf to grow.

Thanks for posting that Pat.  Sounds like a great project, both educational and functional.

Very cool.  Maybe a good spot for a local GCA outing next spring?

Not a bad idea. It would be kind of cool to see what exactly they came up with considering there wasn't a true GCA in charge. Design by committee?

Nice to see the super over at Rich Harvest helping the school in the construction.

Pat,

great story.  I just hope the course plays better than Rich Harvest!

I hope those in the area will get a First Tee program up and going there...

I was out there yesterday and will have a column for next week in the SouthtownStar's sports section. It's very impressive, both from the standpoint of the students doing virtually all the work, including clearing the land, to designing the holes after architect Greg Martin - the Rich Harvest connection - giving them the basics on how to do it. He visited the site at least a half-dozen times, and the super from nearby Stony Creek, a muni in Oak Lawn, a couple of towns over, was also a big help.

The layout is triangular, so you can play clockwise, as designed, or counter-clockwise. There are also tees for disabled to play to an adjacent green.

The course is ready to go with one exception. The school doesn't yet have a greens mower. The Chicago Park District is scheduled to give them one next spring, so the course won't open until then. So now, the bentgrass on the greens and tees is about an inch long. Must be what golf looked like over 100 years ago. Maybe they can use the sheep on the premises in the meantime ...

Since the public will be able to play it, I'll list it in the SouthtownStar's golf guide in the spring.

Thanks for the info Tim. Is the site essentially an open field? How big are the greens? How much earth moving was done?

What is the cost of a well-maintained used greens mower?

I'll contribute $50.  Anybody else?

Mike

Pat, it's on the corner of their active farm, on the east side of Pulaski, at about 113th. Access is by a dirt/gravel service road that leads from the school entrance on 111th. No access from Pulaski, though someone jumped the curb and tore up a green in early spring, which delayed things.

Michael, that is a GREAT idea. I would be happy to contribute as well if we can procure one...
