My design colleague Ross McMurray, the architect for the 2010 Ryder Cup Course at Celtic Manor, has very kindly offered to come down to Porthcawl on Friday night and do an informal Q&A with the BUDA participants after dinner.  I guess he'll talk a little about the task of designing a course for the Ryder Cup too, but we'd like it to be mostly a two-way forum.

This is your chance to put forward questions for Ross, especially for those who aren't going to be lucky enough to be there this year.  Anything you like...within reason!

Firstly, thank you for organising a great guest speaker to this unique event.

For Ross - Digging up my archives I have found a early proposal by EGD for the 2010 course. Holes 1 to 5 and 14 were built as per the original proposals. 16, 17 and 18 were redesigned - what were the reasons for this?

For everyone here are the original proposals for 16, 17 and 18 - originallly a 5,4,4 finish now a 4,3,5 finish.

Is there any dinner arrangement for the Thursday night that i have missed details of? What time are the rest of the dormie crowd getting to the club that evening? I suspect i will hope to be there c 7pm or so and then be ready to find food!

Philip, there are a bunch of us playing at Burnham & Berrow that afternoon, with the earliest tee time at 1:45.  Given the required post round two pints and the rather long drive on to Porthcawl, I suspect we'll be arriving more like 9 p.m. and will be ravenously scavenging through the pubs.

I thought I'd just respond as its 1pm onwards we are playing at Burnham. Its about and hour and a half drive from Burnham to porthcawl, but traffic might be busy early evening around Bristol. Its also just occured to me that we need to go over the Severn Bridge which is a Toll Road:

If we say we'll all be finished at Burnham at about 5.30, an hour or so for drinks then and hour and a half drive, we could be at Porthcawl for more like 8? I've been caught out before with the catering at Burnham so I'm guessing the kitchen will be shut when we finish unless enough people will commit to having some food when we finish and then I can ask if they will stay open? If not we could eat when we get to Porthcawl if we can find a pub still serving?

What do you all think?

I arrive by car from Heathrow to the Atlantic Hotel with an Ocean room view  prob mid afternoon and will be hanging about the Seabank cocktail hour and thereafter offerin  myself to wealthy matrons for tea dances if none of you bloody buggers are sober enough to find your way.

As dinner etc on Friday will clearly extend well into the evening I rang the office at Royal Porthcawl on the off-chance there were any rooms free at the dormie house. It turned out the whole place was empty so I've booked a single and cancelled the first night of my booking in Mumbles (not one of the places recommended by Sean so can't speak for their cancellation policies). Only downside is an earlier start for Clyne Sat am, probably too early for breakfast.

First let me say that Ross McMurray's presentation after dinner last night was outstanding. Thank you Ross for taking the time to share with us!


Learning the inside scoop for the upcoming Ryder Cup venue from the designer of the Twenty-Ten Course was truly a treat.

I want to thank the host team, the guys from over here, Cpt. Tony, Mark, Conrad, Booney, Robin, Ben, Philip, Peter, Lorne, Ally and Andy (I hope I didn't leave out anyone) for making us feel so welcomed.

The BUDA truly is the 'world version' of the GCA Live Experience. 

I'd also like to thank our Captain.  He is a great guy to play for and he is the epitome of a gentleman golfer. Man he's a great partner in Chapman!


Color me a confirmed Budanista, borrowing from Mr. Pepper. I shall never miss one, ever. 

Now, we're off to Pennard and we're tied 5-5.  It's been a great time so far.

Like Eric i had to leave early - I am sure everyone had a fine time today at Pennard.

A big thanks too especially to our US brethren for making the trip. Bill Mcbride, of course, is the acknowledged Buda god. But thank you too for Craig, Eric, Jason, Lou ( I am sorry we did not get to play this time Lou - I hope there is a next time? And delighted your wife joined us - i hope she had a good time), Mike, John, Ward, Joe (forgive me for missed names) for all coming and adding some colour to the event. Indianapolis, Louisville, Kentucky, DC, Pensacola, Nashville, Dallas....what an amazing collection. Bill offered a toast to Ran during our Portchawal dinner for what he had achieved via GCA and occasions like this remind us.

For those reading from afar, you should visit all these courses! We were blessed by the weather at Porthcawl and Clyne in particular. The former is full of character, right on the sea, with some favbulous holes - 2 and 3 were fabulous, and 18 with its finish taking you straight down to the sea was a lot of fun. I am also a big fan of Clyne - anyone who likes soul golf should visit. Pennard has been discussed enough here and remains a jewel.

Now I look forward to hearing how today went - and discovering where the hot money is for next year!
