My somewhat COLD round at The Quarry in Canton, Ohio - PICS
« on: October 12, 2009, 04:31:11 PM »
After waiting for 35 minutes for a frost delay, it was no more than 40 degrees when I teed off yesterday at The Quarry at 8:15 am. I believe that Brian Huntley designed The Quarry. I wonder how much earth had to be moved here? Although I have yet to play Longaberger, the #1 (subjectively anyway) ranked public in Ohio (I might on Sunday), The Quarry could just be one of the top courses in Ohio. It has a few drawbacks however. It is not designed as walkable course given the topography and the routing, I wouldn't expect it to be. I am sure that some sherpas would survive walking the course. It is however, GREAT CART golf. It was as aesthetically pleasing as you could hope for, especially with fall foliage. They left 3-4 old oil wells near a few greens which added to the theme here. I didn't see any steam shovels or bulldozers though. There is a power line that crosses a few holes, but it did not seem unpleasant here for some odd reason. The mismatched homes on the 17th and 18th holes kind of spoil the view and detract from the overall view one gets from playing here. Not quite a let down, but close enough to mention it. Although I don't know what they could have placed there; left the original trees maybe assuming they were there to begin with. There is one other location where I feel they could have hidden a street and some other houses, although they are not on any of the holes. I guess I just hate homes on golf courses. The customer service was awesome, the coffee was terrible and the round set me back $52 plus $2 for my mandatory logo ball.

I thought that The Quarry was very unique, as it is built within an old quarry, but it felt fairly natural to me and NOT contrived, like say Bay Harbor was when I played it this past July. This course is a million times better than Bay Harbor, hands down.  And at a fraction of the price. This course is only a few years old and could be one of the BEST in Ohio. Most definitely worth playing if in the area. There were many opportunities for risk reward as well. Long, straight hitters can go over trees on several holes due to the elevated tee boxes. There were a few tight driving holes; with some of them visually pushing you into certain directions when you really wanted to hit the opposite type of shot for that hole. That made it tough and concentrating was difficult on these holes.

The green complexes were not overly undulated, but they definitely were not easy either. The greens were in perfect condition and fairly quick for a mid October morning. A few of the holes were Ross-esque to where a shot hitting the green could roll back off into a collection area. In short, good shots here at The Quarry can, in fact, be punished. I never felt as if I HAD to keep the driver in the bag on any hole, options were there for the taking.

The course tipped out at over 7,000 yards, I played it around 6400 and it was all I could handle. Play the right tees here and you will enjoy yourself. The 15th tee is a downhill par 5 that you drive over a VERY DEEP ravine. There was a wrecked golf cart down there at the bottom that someone had driven over the edge of the cliff. According to the grounds staff, the guy went all the way to the bottom, and lived to tell about it. Pretty scary, and I cannot believe he actually survived to tell about it.

I could play here all the time and be a happy camper (except for the walking part)

Rich, good looking course, a few questions:

How much are the weekday / weekend green fees?

Walkable?

Are there as many demanding looking forced carries as it appears from your photos?

Does that one hole dogleg left under those high voltage lines?  I see a green off in the distance that seems to be oriented toward the fairway that's on the right side of the power lines.

Thanks!

How much are the weekday / weekend green fees?

I paid $52 weekend (Oct 1st to May 15th) , walking here is not an option. Cheaper during the week. Although their website does not list in season rates rightnow, I want to say it is around $65...

I have walked much hillier courses, but the routing here doesn't really lend it self so much to walking. There are a few jaunts between a few of the holes.

Are there as many demanding looking forced carries as it appears from your photos?

If you play the correct tees here you should be able to carry what you need to. If you are playing the gol=d at 7000+, there were some serious carries off the tee, and you had better be a 280-285+ hitter off the tee.

Does that one hole dogleg left under those high voltage lines?

It does not really dog leg slightly (that is an adjoining par 5 hole on the back nine to the left of #2). This is the second hole, a par 4 and it bends ever so slightly to the right and back to the left again very slightly. It would not be classified as a dog leg as such. It's a fairly long par 4 and demands an excellent drive in order to reach the green in two.  On the par 5 (to the left in the picture), #11,  if you play the hole down the water side, they don't really come into play at all. I want to say that they cross the fairway right around 100 yards.  I guess if your drive was way to the extreme right you might have an issue with the power lines. Local rule is free replay for hitting a power line. Normally I would say power lines distract from the course, but it almost adds to it's industrial flavor.

I see a green off in the distance that seems to be oriented toward the fairway that's on the right side of the power lines.

It's on the left. On the right is the tee box for #10.

Rich;

We played Quarry recently, for the 1st time. I agree, this course is near the top of 'Best Ohio Publics'. And it is great fun. Having seen the wildlife thread, I might add we saw a lot here. The Quarry has had a bit of a bad rep for conditions, being so young. But they were really good when we played there.

BTW, a poster [no, not myself] at golfcleveland.com called The Quarry 'Eagle Ridge Lite'.

Thanks for the write-up, review and pictures!

I had my first "go" of The Quarry back in 2007, and did in fact walk the place (but then again, I'm a walking NUT)...looks like things are coming along there quite nicely and I'll be interested to get back out there myself.

Whoa Evan;

Not just a walking nut, you must be very vigorous also. You remind me of something else I liked about The Quarry. I think too many GCA with elevation in their property use it almost exclusively for downhill. I happen to like some good strong uphill holes. They may seem like a struggle, but they can make you think. And you don't need as much space, I guess.

The Quarry is indeed a great golf course. Ive played there several times already, and its always a fun time. There is alot of local knowledge to it, ie how far to drive it and on what line. If you like half holes, then the quarry has several for you. The par four 4th is 3.5; the par five 7th and 15th are 4.5; and there is even a couple short par threes that are 2.5, the 6th and 12th.

As for the Quarry being better than Bay Harbor, i would have to strongly disagree.  I played BH several years ago, and the Links nine was an absolute blast. The Quarry nine has a couple average holes, but they are quickly overlooked with exciting risk reward holes that make up the last six holes.  Believe me, when the Quarry first opened, I exclaimed to all my friends that they had to play it. I really think that it is a top five ohio public golf course. But it is not better than Bay Harbor.

Thanks Kalen.  I guess there are just certain things on this website that will NEVER DIE...

At least now I've got a cool new lightweight Sun Mountain carry bag that is easier to walk or push-cart with.  I carried it this past Sunday as Shawn can attest.

Shawn...help a brother out here!  ;D

Shawn, I agree, there are a few strong holes along Lake Michigan, but when you factor in everything, most importantly the PRICE, IMO The Quarry beats BH in a heads up battle royale. Bay Harbor was (somewhat) worth the $89 surcharge we paid the Boyne Resort this summer to play, but I just don't feel "compelled" to "go back" there as I do with many other golf courses I have played. The Quarry is just as fun as BH, and is as visually stimulating even without a Great Lake to gaze at on a handful of holes.

A golf course that "compels" you to return again for another round is the ultimate judgement factor in my book. I feel that if you are compelled to return (and do), then the course architect did a GOOD JOB!

Rich. I try very hard not to include price in my opinion of a golf course. however, Kalen and I played this past weekend, and we both agreed that its not just a course itself that makes the experience memorable, but other factors too, such as clubhouse, history, aura, etc. Bay Harbor cost me 150 to play when i went up there, which at the time was the most money i ever payed to play golf, but I had such a great time that i soon forgot about it after teeing off. The Quarry is cheaper, and I agree, is visually stimulating, but there were several holes at BH where myself and my playing companions just stood on the tee hitting shots trying to do different stuff. I remember specifically teeing balls just off the seventh green hitting drivers out into lake michigan. The ball would hang in the air what seemed like forever. It was so cool. We also tried to drive the fifteenth green a few times more than we should have. Just great fun.

PS Kalen did look good carrying his lightweight bag this weekend. The soup we played in was not the easiest or most pleasant to walk in. lol.

Shawn,

I guess that I might feel better about BH had I not played Arcadia Bluffs first. I forgot all about the $180 I dropped there, so I understand your point of view.

Rich, thanks for the post! I must have completely missed this thread last year.

I tried hitting up The Quarry last year when I visited the in-laws in Wooster, but couldn't get a time that worked for me. Actually had to go through a few courses on my Northern Ohio to-play list until I got to Shale Creek, which is Quarry's sister course. While I did enjoy my round at Shale Creek, I don't really have a desire to get back right away. Have you played any of the other courses up there like Little Mountain or Boulder Creek?

I see Longaberger is in your signature as an upcoming play. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Longaberger and comparison to Quarry. Consensus is these are the two best publics in Ohio. I've played Longaberger and while I think it's very good, I still feel there is a better public course in Ohio I haven't played yet. Of course, I spoiled myself by playing Trophy Club in Indy last month, so everything I play in the Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky region will be compared to that course going forward  ;D

Criss,

Boulder Creek is a fun, interesting place...take a pass on Little Mountain.
