Before and after comments wanted (pics)

Our club removed some evergreens behind a par three that were in rough shape. What should be done now? Replant the hill with healthy species, plant native grass / wildflowers  , other suggestions ?

native grasses?
I think the hole looks better and its scale is enhanced without trees providing a backdrop

Those look like different holes with the change in lighting..

Mike:

What is that behind the green ...a natural creek?

Why, if so, does it end...did the creek get buried for some reason...

I like the idea of planting absolutely nothing and letting the grass grow...

Behing the green is a rock wall. Left from when it was a farm. It could be restacked or extended.

It does look like a different hole. To the chagrin of some.

I would not do anything that would block the view of that priceless wall.  I think it looks great as is and shouldn't be hard to keep in that condition with an occasional mowing of the native grasses.

Move the green to the top of the hill.

I 2nd that, it would make it a terrific challenging hole, even if it changes the par
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cary,
Or they could just add the green and have a two-fer.

Looks a lot sunnier up on that hill.

It looks like thats a street on the top of the hill and then the next tee on the other side of it....

I wonder if the rock wall would really stand out against brownish "native" grass. I'd tend towards maintaining the hill as short rough, similar to what's in front of the green. If the hill is green and manicured, the rough stone wall would stand out more.

But...are there native/long grass areas on other parts of the course?

The hole is definetly better and the option to do nothing certainly is valid. Looks like a new tees has been added behind the rock wall for the next hole. If that is true, there could be some validity to planting some native grasses or native grasses mixed with wild flowers behind the wall on the slopes in order to tone down the attention of the this new tee while playing the Par 3. I would also put a little more attention to the rock wall and re-dry stack it. Does it just kind of end like in the picture or it the last part not showing? I would expand it to a more logical termination maybe finisheing at the cart path, with a walkway in the middle for access what appears to be the new tee. Try to follow the the contour base of the slope with any wall extention if those are the clubs desires to expand. Opinions are a dime a dozen, thats my ten cents worth.

Mike,   Would there be any interest in a bunker behind the green to add more of a depth perception of the green from the tee? I also like the concept of rebuilding the stone wall.  Nice hole!          Jack

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say I like the before better.

I think what needs to be softened is the hard horizontal line that is the roadway.  The street lamp doesn't do anything for me either.

Maybe some trees would be a good spot, it would frame the green nicely.

Move the cart path way over to the right or eliminate it altogether.

Keep cutting trees down on the left side and remove the tree casting the morning shade from the right.  The hillside behind the green would look fine with some hard fescue grass established. Also, are those rock outcrops on the hillside?  If so then maybe they could be exposed more.  This would break up the slope some.

Nice job work to this point.

Obviously the shade created by those trees must have been a problem. To me the hole looks better without them. I do agree that the cart path should be moved.
Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

Isn't it obvious that you can't take that pole out behind the green - it's a speed camera to ticket carts exceeding the limit.  Rebuild the rock wall which is a neat feature and leave it alone.  You don't need something to distract you from the green complex - especially where the tee is above the green.

The pole on the hill is a birdhouse.

Perhaps there are some photoshop guys on here to help. The rock wall is quite wide and could be repositioned to wrap around the green instead of climbing up the hill and ending. I will post a close up later.

Thanks for the comments!
