US Mid-am At Kiawah (Cassique)
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:24:34 PM »
I don't know much about the the Cassique course, but I found this interesting. Maybe somebody has pics?

From the Mid-Am website

For stroke play, hole Nos. 4-6 will play at 370, 148 and 525 yards, respectively, but once the second round of match play begins, competitors will utilize alternate teeing grounds (360, 155 and 565 yards) on what members call the “pulpit” and “nip-tuck” holes. When playing the “pulpit” layout, golfers will utilize the right portion of the “split fairway” on the 370-yard, par-4 fourth hole, then have an extreme downhill tee shot at the par-3 fifth hole before and playing the par-5 sixth from a tee that is not elevated. In the “nip-tuck” version, the left side of the fairway is used on No. 4, while the tee shot for the fifth is uphill to the alternate green of No. 4 (hole features two different greens). The par-5 sixth features an elevated tee that offers an entirely different look.

Allison Jarrett, the director of the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship, said it is likely the “pulpit” and “nip-tuck” routings will each be used the last two days of the competition, including the 36-hole championship match.

Good luck to our own Jamie Slonis..........

Sean:

Before I had played Cassique and upon reading about the sequence of 4-5-6, it sounded odd. But once I played it, I felt that it worked GREAT! I'd be surprised if more architects don't experiment with such a set-up in some way in the future. I wish I could describe it easily, but you really need to see it (or at least an aerial).

Overall, Cassique far exceeded the expectations that I had for it. The fact that I played it in a solid rain from start to finish and still enjoyed it immensely says a lot! I HATE playing in the rain.

Regards,

Doug

I just walked the course with a buddy who was participating in the Mid-Am.  Let me say this, the Nip-Tuck portion will/should play considerably more difficult at the par 3 5th plays as 165+ uphill shot to green with shaved fall-offs front & right as opposed to the par 3 5th in the pulpit version (130ish downhill to a green with a generous backboard).

Olympia Fields' club champ Troy Logan is in the match play, and the Chicago contingent (well, at least one of us) is cheering him on.
That was one hellacious beaver.

A couple of ladies from my club are still alive at the Women's Mid Am...does anybody know anything about Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club?  I have to admit that I had not heard of it.

What a player.  Won't be the last time he'll be on the club's hardware.

HUGE shout-out to Rochester, New York's Tim Spitz, who is in the finals against Nathan Smith.  Spitz plays at the classic Ross layout, Monroe Golf Club.  He is a hell of a player with a great short game.  He's gonna give the Walker Cupper a run for his money tomorrow.

Small world story.  I am at the mid-am as an official and notice the Monroe logo and a bag tag with Spitz on it (and the pro was still Jim Myrva).  I recognized the name and it turns out I stayed with Tim's grandfather while playing in the Monroe Am over 20 years ago.  Great family and I had the chance to catch up with Tim at the players barbecue.

Good luck Tim!

Obviously being a Pennsylvanian and because I know him I'm pulling for Nathan Smith. If he wins it would be his second US Mid-Am Championship, I believe (because I think I remember him playing with Arnold Palmer in the Masters and just missing a putt on the 36th hole to miss the cut by a shot). Nathan Smith is obviously a very very fine player but I feel he is in the top few best course managers I've ever seen---eg making dumb mental mistakes is something he rarely if ever seems to do.

Nathan Smith did win it before, in 2003. Curiously enough, when I looked it up, I saw that the medalist that year was Tripp Davis, who used to post on here.

Davis was also a quarterfinalist this year, where he lost to Tim Spitz.  Nathan Smith is was the only mid-Amateur on the Walker Cup team, where he played superbly alongside Peter Uihlein in both foursomes matches.  He has certainly played great golf today.  No bogeys until the 24th Hole (!) is very tough to beat.
