GCA One Hit Wonders?

How many architects have we had in history of golf who are "one hit wonders"?

I think Fownes/Oakmont is probably the best example that I know. Who else would qualify?

I think some of Kidd's post Bandon courses are better than the original - although several are probably a little extreme.

Nanea looks really cool - it might be better? - and Mac Dunes will probably get better with time as the rough is trimmed down - better? Tetherow has some very cool holes as well although BD is a superior overall routing.

I've also played Stonebrae and The Castle Course. Neither is as good as Bandon but he started with less as well. Both are far better than average.

I think Neville also did Diablo CC. It's not great now, but it may have been when he built it.

Problem with this exercise is it assumes current architects will never "strike gold" again

For discussion purposes, however...

Baxter Spann.  Black Mesa gets a ton of run but I cannot recall any other course he's done.

Finger Dye Spann, Inc did also create Pinon & Paa-Ko

For our discussion, why don't we say one hit wonder is an architect who only has one course that he/she designed that would not be out of place on any top 100 list. But no other course by that same architect would even sniff that list.

DMK also has courses in the world/international 100's on various magazines, and if you are hired by the R&A/St.Andrews you aint a one hit wonder in my book.


What about the Campbell's who designed The Country Club in Mass?
