Rory,

My guys really enjoyed #17 at Enniscrone. I think there is a postage size area short and right where you can hit with confidence.

Mike:

You are correct and anything that is not front or short will bounce through unless you are straight into the wind.
10 and 14 at Rolling Green also deserve mention.

The 5th at Pine Valley. Does anyone remember the Shell's WW of Golf match between Byron Nelson and Gene Littler? For a U.S. Open champion to get waylaid like Littler did, is proof enough of its toughness.

The 16th at CPC.

The 16th at Carnoustie.

The 9th on the New Course, St.Andrews.

#11 at Shinnecock gets scarier and scarier every time I play it . . .

Ted,

I don't think it's intimidating from the tee, and that may be part of its deceptiveness.
It plays harder than it looks.

As to Bill Korteum's question, # 11 at Shinnecock would have to be high on that list.

Ted - #11 at Shinnecock is a fantastic hole. I believe it plays about 150 yds from the middle tee. One of my favorite golf holes - Great call!

Cypress #16 the first time.  Too much anticipation for any golfer to overcome...

With a bail out area conveniently to the left, why does anyone think that # 16 at CPC is that intimidating from the tee.

Yale's 9th has no bail out area, it's a pass/fail proposition.

Can par 3's with safe, bail out areas be that intimidating ?

If the golfer removes the bail out option from his mind I can understand how daunting and intimidating the tee shot is, but, in the back of the golfer's mind, he always knows he has a safe option.

That option doesn't exist at # 5 and # 14 at PV nor at # 9 at Yale.

Pat,

Unless one does not have the ability to make it to the green, a lay-up should not even be an afterthought.

What's not intimidating about a 235 yard carry over the ocean, especially on what is perhaps the most famous hole in the world?  Please explain.

Thanks,
Jordan

The 8th hole at Thomas McBroom's Links at Crowbush Cove on Prince Edward Island certainly presents a serious challenge to even the best shotmaker. It plays 219 yds from the Championship tees with a carry of almost that full distance over an inlet from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Depending on the wind direction this hole at times can be actually unplayable from that distance. For the timid you can try to hit an extra club and play your second shot out of one of the deep bunkers that are at the back of the green.

Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

How about the 4th at Riviera? It's a very long hole from the back tees, and with the big bunker front left it's a small target. I had never hit driver to a par 3 before that...

Obviously you've got 15 and 16 at Cypress Point, and the likes of the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon are intimidating due to the small green and the potential of wind affecting your shot (see also 7 at Pebble Beach).

There's also the 16th at Vale do Lobo in Portugal, which is a mini version of the 16th at Cypress Point.

Left at CPC 16 isn't a bail out area,it's an option for those unable/unwilling to aim at the green. At that point,it becomes a short par 4.

Tom,

Riviera's 4th hole is a wonderful hole but there is a bunch of room to the right of the bunker and a well hit draw is the shot of choice.

I have heard that the layup on 16 is an "exhilirating layup", although i wouldn't know as the Ocean got two of my balls in attempting to go for the green  ;D

That's very true Bob, but I'm left handed and the high, soft landing cut with a driver isn't a shot I have in my particular locker... Phil Mickelson I am not!
