Mike Malone's One Word for each UK Course he played

    I try to come with one word for a course.

    For example, Ballybunion is "Magical".


     I am open to your suggestions but here is my tentative first crack.



        Royal Ashdown Forest-         Unique

        Rye                                    Terrier----short but fierce
    
        Littlestone                          Friendly

        Sandwich                            Championship

        Deal                                    Beguiling

       Burnham and Berrow              Consistent

       Royal Porthcawl                      Fours-----I loved the set of par fours

       Pennard                                Lunar

What an amazing links that is.  I loved the views out over the bay and the ruined castle and church wall.

"Links in the Sky" is too many words I guess......

Mike,

Summing up a course in one word is tough, so you must realise people are going to query the chosen word. I think I get most of them, but why did you choose consistent for Burnham? I'll add that this is a loaded question as I'm a country member, but do tell...

It's a long time since I played there (B&B) but mine would be Buckthorn.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

St. Andrews New and Jubilee -- dune'd

Cruden Bay -- first  (my first course, on my first--and so far only--trip)

Aberlour -- intoxicating (oops, that's  distillery... well the tasting was all of that)

The Old Course -- collegial  (it forever convinced me that seclusion is overrated on a golf hole.)

I have played Deal, what, at least half a dozen times over not far off 20 years.  Every time has been a brutal experience getting back to the house - a load of wood play through the green facing the same shot over and over.  Plus, I don't think I have seen Deal anywhere near its worst.  I would guess the last beat-back (during Buda a few years back) involved 25 mph which made play very difficult and not a lot of fun.  That said, I am not fan of winds that high for golf no matter which direction they come from unless its already raining and I have hopes of a blow over.  Sadly, on this particular day the rain didn't blow away, but that didn't stop a handful of fools (this fool not included) going out for what must have been a severely abbreviated round (they were back in an hour) after lunch.  

None of this should come as much of a surprise.  Deal is most famous for its beat-back which provides the course with much of its reputation as tough.   I would like to see Deal in a pleasant 15mph wind - very gentlemanly indeed.  Plus, I would like to see how the turf looks.

In that case it's doubly sad that you couldn't make BUDA this year.  As benign as any conditions I have ever played links golf in.
