Who knew?
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:00:07 PM »
I was shocked to learn that Mickelson earned $3 million for finishing 2nd in the Fedex Cup. For all the hype, all the permutations and calculations all day Sunday, not one brodcaster mentioned this. How come?

Did anyone know this? Am I alone?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Really? I thought I heard it mentioned in the post round Tiger interview (done during his cup presentation)

I thought it was funny when Phil mentioned him getting the smaller check in his interview. I also thought it was odd in how he carefully declined to say it was a "big win" for him.  Now, he might have tied it to his new philosophy on life given the breast cancer issues the women in his life have, but I didn't get that impression. It seemed like he was determined NOT to give the FEDEX CUP the prestige it seeks.

I also thought Tiger could have been a bit more gracious in his speech.  No mention of Phil winning, although the announcer joked that it was a week when Tiger and Phil both won at the same time.

He's Tiger Woods, he doesn't need to be gracious.......... ;) (totally agree though, he's really turning into a total curmudgeon in his old age...)

I agree that he could have been a bit more gracious.  However, I thought the same thing after I heard the Michael Jordan Hall of Fame speech.  After a couple days of reflection, I came to think that the reason these two (MJ, Tiger) are the truly elite, to the point that they are without question the premier athletes in their respective sports, is because they are that way.  They don't think the way we do.  They can't.  What drives/drove them them to be so great, better than anyone else is something that the average person just doesn't grasp.  It's a completely different level.

Good or bad, it's just who they are.  I'd bet if they even wanted to change, they couldn't.

You make some good points there.

However I think TW is getting worse in his reticence to fans/press and moodiness on the course - call it his "aura" if you want!!
