Medinah Renovation Photos

I went out for a tour of Course #3 for the second time today and brought along the camera.  I didn't have a lot of time so please excuse the rushed nature of the photos and incomleteness of the holes.  Although most all of the grees have received some attention on contouring and expansion, the biggest changes are the 3rd hole, 6th hole, 10th hole and 11th hole.  As you will see, the 15th hole has been totally redone.

Anyways, enjoy.

The new 6th tee.  Like the new 7th tee, the additional teeing surface finally adds some left to right to the golf course.  The back tees have been moved back and to the right of the old tees requiring a fade off of a series of bunkers on the left side of the fairway.  Like 7, below, the first tree on the right is likely going to get slayed - thus opening up a view of the fairway.  To those who are familiar with this hole in the past, significant tree removal has already occurred at or around the tee area.

New sixth green - significantly expanded into the front right of the surface.

This is picture of the new tee on the 7th hole.  This par 5 will now stretch to 600+ yards.  The addition of the new tee finally brings the left bunkers back into play for the tour players and makes this a real three shotter - which contrasts nicely with the par 4.5 5th hole that was massacred in 2006 as a par 5.  We haven't begun the full tree removal but I think the maples on the right will be slayed, thus opening up the fairway to view from the tee.

Here' s a picture of the 9th hole.  The grow-in given this awesome late summer weather has been remarkable.

Here's the 10th hole.  There is some talk about twisting the bunker on the right, having it run more parallel to the fairway.  It thnk it would be a great change as I, and other longer hitters, just blow it over the bunker on the right.

Here's a picture of the 12th hole.  The fairway has been extended up to teh back of the green, thus leaving ta strong run off the hill to any shot missing the green on the right.  This small change has made a challenging hole, even more challenging but has made themost beautiful hole on the course, more beautiful in my opinion.

The new 15th hole from the tee.  The green can be seen as the light brown sand colored mass.  The large water hazard can been seen on the right.  Final digging and drainage is underway.

The white flags indicate the future anticipated water level.

The 15th green from the new 16th tee.

The view from what will likely be the hottest hospitality spot from the Ryder Cup - right behind the new, 285 yard par 4, 15th hole.

Here's a view from the new 16th tee.  No longer will longer hitter have to hit a 3/4 hooking three wood.

Ryan,
It appears that the "old" tees are round and the new ones , like on #16 seem to be square...is that right?

Anthony:

I think the "old" tees are going to be squared off as well.

it looks great!!  Hopefully some of the pros will start to be challenged again on a shot by shot basis.

When did work start the grass on some of the first shots looks like it is all grown in.  I know we have had great weather but it must be growing faster than anyone expected.

Ryan:  Which firm is doing the construction work on the course?  Been out of the loop on this one.....thanks.

Being the first course I played, I have generally not liked the changes Rees has made, just because they mess with my childhood memories.  I do understand why they were made, however, and the course probably plays better, even with a new look.  Now that I see the changes to shorten 15 and lengthen the tee shot on 16, I think the solution is pretty brilliant. 15 was never that strong anyway and 16 was always a signature hole, even moreso after the Sergio shot, that didn't play well.   While not a signature hole, the short dogleg on 9 was also a problem.

I wonder why a problem identified in the 1975 US Open wasn't solved until now, given all the other changes made to the course by numerous gca's, but hats off to Rees on this one.  I also wonder if he proposed it earlier but was rejected in the name of tradition, or some such?

Figured as much since it's right in their backyard but had to ask.  Looks like some great modifications. Thanks Tony and good luck with the new gig!

Ryan-
Will the new run-off area short and right of #12 green allow balls to find the water?  Could make for interesting second shots if players play away from the tree?  Forgive me, I don't recall how closely that lake encroaches.

It is my understanding that for day-to-day play (and maybe all play) there will be a two to three foot barrier of rough preventing balls from going in the water.  That said, the fairway runs all the way up to the backside of the green.

In the 1990 US Open, Hale Irwin made an unbelievable shot off the fairway on 16, to the green, to stay with Donald in that Monday play-off round.

When the Open was finished I walked right to where Irwin's divot was in the fairway and stood over what he was looking at only moments earlier.

He had to draw the ball around the tree line and land it on a green which is at an elevation at least 20 feet higher than where he was standing in the fairway. And I think he was over 200 yards out, playing an iron.

To me, that shot was way more amazing than Sergio's on 18.
