From what I can tell, so many of the clubhouses in Scotland, England and Ireland ooze with character and history. Some could charge for admission just to see some of the artifacts on display inside! I could see myself getting lost in the atmosphere at Prestwick for an afternoon. What are some of your favorites and why? How would you compare the clubhouse experiences there compared to here? If there is a measurable difference, which do you prefer generally speaking?
First, on Preswick. It did little for me. The pro shop was fine. The doorman was stuffy. Apparently the downstairs dining room is for members in coat and tie, so we did not make it in there. We did have lunch after our round in the Cardinal Room, upstairs, which was a casual coffee-shop-type of room, with excellent service. Our group of four and two members were eating there at that time. So, maybe we needed a member to take us under his (her? probably not, but who knows) wing and show us around.
Muirfield. Best shower stalls I've experienced in Britain. For the rest of the clubhouse, can't say much. Again, visitors are really limited as to what they can see and the staff is very stuffy.
Royal Troon. Again, visitors can't see much. In fact, members are not allowed to socialize with visitors (vs. guests) in the clubhouse. Under certain conditions we could have visited their treasure room, but passed.
Crail. Unpretentious and very friendly. I could be a member there, if they'd have me. I think I read they were going to build a new club house. Hope they don't get too fancy.
Dunbar. Nice casual dining room for visitors, but visitors are restricted from other areas.
Does anyone else have a problem with a jumping screen when posting on this site, or is it just me?
