I may be wrong... but I have seen an interesting dynamic in several cities
in regards to the "Best Country Club" and the "Best Golf Club." There
are two clubs... the country club is known for its fine dining and exclusivity...
the golf club is known for an amazing golf experience. The same members
belong to both clubs. Usually a group from the fancy country club goes off
and builds another facility with "serious golfer" design, conditioning and difficulty.
Here are some examples, that, in my opinion, fit this description (I may be mistaken)...
but I do not know the history of each:
Charlotte, NC: Charlotte Country Club and Quail Hollow Club
Richmond, VA: Country Club of Virginia and Kinloch
Winston-Salem, NC: Forsyth Country Club and Old Town
Pittsburgh, PA: Allegheny Country Club and Sewickley Heights Golf Club
Raleigh, NC: Carolina Country Club and Old Chatham
Washington, DC (Maryland): Congressional Country Club and The Members Club at Four Streams
Linville, NC: Grandfather Country Club and Diamond Creek
1. Can anyone else state any examples in another city?
2. Can you elaborate on the history/origins of each club in that city? Or the one's listed above?
