From Salon.com (a left-wing political site that I occasionally visit to see what the other half thinks) a nice background story on the pre-civil war duel that was fought on what is now the grounds of the San Francisco Golf Club, and Tillinghast's "Duel" hole, and which resulted in the death of Senator Broderick.

I had of course long been aware of the "Duel" hole's historic significance; but I did not know that there were physical markers as to the site:

For the record, the duel markers are still there, but I don't think they are on SFGC property ... I think they are part of a small park and that parking is available off Lake Merced Blvd.  They are in the bottom of the hollow below and to the right of #7 tee.

That park is pretty close to my only golf at SFGC - a couple of us young miscreants climbed over the chain link fence there in the Fall semester of 1959 and played a few holes until asked to leave.

I was amazed by the number and impact of the bunkering, particularly the fairway bunkers.
