TOMMY's HONOR  is an excellent book to read on the way to Scotland.   Or Malcolm Campbell's GOLF IN SCOTLAND.

Another recommendation not specifically GCA...

Extraordinary Golf by Fred Shoemaker

If you're looking for a more "organic" book to help you enjoy your rounds on those special courses instead of a more "technical" book, it's a very quick read.

Tony M,

Bravo. I damn near pissed myself when I read that I was laughing so much. Easily the funniest thing I've read on this site, unfortunately 99% of the people on here won't have a clue. As Bill says, two nations divided by a common language.

Cheers

What is wrong with you confounded people?  ;)

There is only one book to read on a trip to Scotland:  Golf in the Kingdom (even if it's your 20th read).

Not enough time in the flight to finish ;D.

Or your 20th attempt to read?

Brilliant stuff Tony.  I had to hit Google Earth immediately, and now know where the A939 runs.  :-)

As for the original topic, the Finegan books are great, but also read them before you plan that trip.

Books are so 20th century...

Buy him an iPod and fill it up with golf raps and songs about golf course architecture.  He'll appreciate it more.

Or to take someone else's previous idea about reading chapters in an audio book format to the next level - we could each summarize a chapter in the form of a song or a rap and record it.

John Low's Concerning Golf and Patric Dickinson's A Round of Golf Courses.

If they aren't the best golf books (though they are up there),they are certainly the most under-appreciated books in the literature.

Tony,

I didn't understand any of the quiz, but laughed out loud anyway.  Thanks.

If intending to play some of Old Tom courses then I would suggest Bob Kroeger's book 'The Golf Courses of Old Tom Morris'. There are a few errors and not all the courses are listed, but for a book printed in 1995, it is well formatted and talks about surviving Old Tom holes and features.  Still enjoy the book today.

Tony,

Great quiz...I may be one of the few yanks who knows what show Archie and Hector played in. I'm a big Lexie fan..

Hmmm, the actor who played Archie is Alastair MacKenzie....very sublime. :)

The Seagrams Guide to Strategic Golf. 36 pages of sheer genius. Taught me everything I know.... ;D

So, you are the Gil T. Mann from The Lounge.

I suggest watching - in flight - the movie Trainspotting.  It has wonderful travel advice.
