Walker Cup Invitation& Thanks from Shreiner Bros
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:35:27 PM »
To all GCAers and even lurkers,Kris Shreiner of Jacksonville, FL and his brother Steve of Shreiner Tree Care Specialists, Inc.
( www.shreinertreecare.com ) in King of Prussia, PA are having a between rounds lunch on September 12 &13 from 11am to 2pm at St. George's Episcopal Church, 1 West Ardmore Avenue, across from the second green, Here is the invitation:

As fans of GCA, lurker Kris Shreiner, staunch supporter of caddie golf, and his brother Steve, Philadelphia-based golf arborist, are hosting a festive BBQ luncheon, in between sessions, on both competition days. It promises to be a wonderful interlude during what should be a stirring weekend of championship golf.

St. George is directly up the street, just a short walk from the Main Entrance of Merion Golf Club. A golf cart shuttle service will be available for those needing assistance.  Just let us know, provide cell contact info and we will pick you up.

All GCA’ers, friends and family, as well as fellow lurkers are cordially invited to attend. There will be no charge for either day. All the Shreiners ask is that those wishing to attend kindly RSVP by 9/9/09 via email to…pam@shreinertreecare.com or call (610)265-6004, give the number in your party, and you’re on the list! Confirmation and directions will be sent promptly and they look forward to hosting and meeting fellow GCA addicts.

A “Grand Slam” Pumpkin Contest will also be held, with all proceeds going to the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust, benefitting our deserving caddie youth seeking higher education.

Please note…all instigating ANY Merion thread banter will be promptly shackled and escorted from the premises!!!

Take care and see you there!

So far, the RSVPs are off to a good start. This will be a good spot for a gathering. I understand that Tom Paul will be leaving his command center to attend the Walker Cup!!!!

Steve:

St George's Episcopal Church is not exactly across Ardemore Ave from Merion's second green. You must proceed west on Ardmore Ave from the second green (unless you can break through the fence behind the sixth green ;) ) to the light and you can't miss it as it is staring you in the face on the southwest corner.

The only actual requirment for attending the lunch is all participants must convert to Episcopalianism, at least for a few hours and before they are allowed to eat a morsel or drink a drop. This is only fitting as all Walker Cup visitors will find themselves either in or very, very close to one of the primary headquarters of world-wide WASPdom!

Would I have to return my bar mitzvah gifts?

"Would I have to return my bar mitzvah gifts?"

Of course not Jeff; you only need to pay me a very reasonable stipend. I'm sorry about that but it's just the way it is---I'm incorrigble. An example is if I find loose cash like lying around unwalleted in someone's house I just take it since I figure if they wanted to make it that obvious they must have intended for me to have it.

By the way, does anyone know what the official USGA/Merion cell phone policy is on site at the Walker Cup? I wonder if it's going to be like the US Open where you can't take one through the checkpoint before you get on the bus.

Joe:

Thanks for that official cell phone statement. But now Wayne has sent me a whole laundry list of things I can't bring to the Walker Cup. I mean I guess I can live with not bringing my cooler with all my drinks and food or even my bicycle, stepstool or pets but the last item on the list includes firearms. If that means I can't bring my Smith and Wesson .45 calibre handgun to the Walker Cup I really don't see how I can attend this thing. I think it would be best if I just watched in on TV. I will make the lunches at St George's Episcopal Church though because I'm an Episcopalian and I know just as sure as shootin' that I can bring my .45 into any Episcopal Church FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!!

Cameras are allowed on Friday :)

Steve - This is really cool!  Thanks for sharing the good news!

PS - Good article on Matt Shaffer's work at Merion (he's not related to Steve, but he does live way out in the boonies near me!)  http://www.philly.com/inquirer/local/20090824_Walker_Cup_s_other_stars__The_greenskeepers.html

Steve, amen!
We've needed these low dewpoints to dry things out.  This summer has been horrible with all the rain, and this nice spell should result in fantastic conditions at Merion.

Anybody else who hasn't already done it who wants to meet at the cookout for lunch on Saturday or Sunday at the Episcopal church behind the 6th green (at the light on Ardmore Ave) be sure to add your name here or get in touch with Steve Shaffer.

I know some of you will be arriving on Friday and attending the opening ceremony at 5:30 PM.  A fellow GCA member, Ward Peyronnin, will be coming in late in the afternoon and he and I will be doing something that evening for dinner.  If you would like to join us (it may end up being at my place), please IM or e-mail me.

Joe,
IMd. I will be there, sounds much better than going to the Philllys/Mets and getting a hotfog.

Joe - exactly where is the opening ceremony taking place?

By the way - here's the route map for the Norristown high speed line:  http://www.septa.com/service/sched/maps/100.pdf

I'd suggest parking at Gulph Mills near PA-252 and I-76.  If you've never ridden this route, just be sure to flip the switch at the platform to allert the trolley operator that he has a pickup.  It's really the best way to get to Merion - it's very fast and cheap.

PS - If you're very sneaky, you can catch a glimpse of the wonderful Ross-designed Gulph Mills GC is essentially across the street from the tolley station.
