SF to Minnesota via LA. Advice sought
« on: August 24, 2009, 02:12:18 PM »
Hey everybody,

Posting this for a friend of mine and frequent lurker.

Greetings to all in the Treehouse –
I’m a buddy of Jeff Shelman’s and a former member on here long ago and now a very frequent lurker. I’ve got a month off work now before the NBA season begins again and I have to go back to covering the Timberwolves for the Star Tribune here in Minneapolis. On short notice, I am planning to fly out to San Francisco next week to fetch my sister’s car and drive it back to Minnesota.
Here’s my plan. I am seeking the fertile imaginations of everyone on here for suggestions in helping me plan my itinerary. I’m looking for courses you can walk if possible (depending upon the heat, of course) and would like to keep it under $50 a round (I’m a big twilight guy) if possible except for perhaps one big splurge:
I have about two weeks to make it a leisurely adventure. I’ll pick up the car and drive it down the PCH past Big Sur on my way to L.A. to spend a long Labor Day weekend there with a friend. I’ll play at least once on the way down and have played Pebble (out of my price range this time or just about any time any more), Pacific Grove, Hunter Ranch, Monarch Dunes, La Purisima, Sandpiper, Soule Park and of course the beloved Rustic Canyon before and will happily play any of those again but am also up for someplace new.
From L.A., I’m thinking of stopping in Phoenix for a couple nights and playing Saguaro and Talking Stick North. From there, I’d like to go to the Grand Canyon because that’s one destination place I’ve never been. Any recommendations for Flagstaff or Colorado as I work my way back to either I-70 or 1-25? Thought about traveling thru northwest New Mexico and hitting a place like Pinon Hills, or is that passé by now?
And what’s the chance of me calling up somebody at Ballyneal or Colorado Golf Club and getting on with a guest fee (I am a Golf Writers Association of America member if that makes any difference) as my one splurge of the trip (have been to Sand Hills once before, so I thought I’d maybe see how Doak sees the sandhills).
Then, of course, I’d stop at Wild Horse and possibly Bayside on I-80 on my way back to Minnesota. I’d like to break the driving up into, say, 8-10 hour days and play golf in between to make the trip more leisurely. If the golf options for New Mexico are absolutely can’t-miss prospects, I could go that way and nix the Grand Canyon. Any other sightseeing stops I shouldn’t miss?
My other thought is to go through New Mexico to Oklahoma City and then head north and try to hit Prairie Dunes if I could get on there instead.
Anyway, thanks for any suggestions you can toss my way!

Courses somewhat along the route that are reasonably priced and I enjoy:

1.   San Juan Oaks - Hollister - good value in your price range  http://golfsoutherndunes.com/

In Az check overseed schedules.  Courses to consider:

2.   Vista Verde - Scottsdale   http://arizona.twoguyswhogolf.com/reviews/tontoverdevista.html
3.   Southern Dunes - PHX    http://golfsoutherndunes.com/
4.  Apache Stronghold (if open)   http://www.apachegoldcasinoresort.com/Golf.html

Consider Palm Springs

5.  Terra Lago
6.  PGA West - Stadium (skip Norman)
7.  La Quinta Mountain

I would add New Mexico to the itinerary and skip the Grand Canyon

8.  Black Mesa
9.  Paa Ko Ridge

Denver would be a terrific stop but I do not know the courses well enough there

I am sure you have been to the Harvester but if not, make it the final stop on your tour.

Get ready for the bustling excitement of Target Center this year!

The Grand Canyon is very much worth a look...and a hla day should do unless you want to do a few hikes.  To boot, you don't have to stray to far from Hwy 40 to get there either.

After that whether you go south back to 40 and thru NM or make your way north up to 70 is personal preference.  If you head north though, be sure to stop in at Forest's hideout in Monticello, UT as well as stop and spend at least half a day in Arches National Park. Then once you jump on 70 you can hit Lakota Canyon as you make ur way to Denver.

But you'll surely have a lot more options if you head east thru NM i'm guessing....even though the sites/parks are better driving up thru Southern Utah.

Why not north from PHX to Flagstaff, find a way onto Forest Highlands, then east to Paa-Ko and Black Mesa?

Numerous options around Omaha as well.  Gene or one of the other local experts can add more.

EDIT to amend geography brain cramp.

There are too many options and many good suggestions have been made.

The Grand Canyon is not on the beaten path, but, it should be worth the extra travel.

Since price seems a big factor, I can recommend heading north out of Flagstaff, to Tuba City, cutting across the Rez on #160. (You could get to Monticello and Cortez before Farmington)

I'd play Pinon Hills (still under $50) but ask to start on #10 with a turn time for #1.  ( It's a small back track to Cortez, co. and Monticello, ut.  if you are really looking for golf values. Conquistador in Cortez is a Press Maxwell museum piece and The Hideout in Monticello is Forrest's, and are both dirt cheap and decent golf)
Then I'd either go to east to Black Mesa or head straight north to Delta Co. for Rick Phelp's Devil's Thumb. If you go east to Black Mesa then head north on #25 you can play Walking Stick in Pueblo and Antler Creek in Falcon (NE of Colo SPrgs.)

From there I would try Holyoke. They may let you in with those media creds. If not I might know someone who can help.

Bayside and Wild Horsey are must plays.

From there you're on you own. But, if you've never been to Lawsonia, it's worth the extra distance to the east.

I'd say maybe not to San Juan Oaks. Maaaaybe if you play early to avoid the wind, but the greens are poa annua and really spongy these days. In the afternoon when the wind blows 20, it's not overly fun.

Blackhorse and Bayonet in Monterey are certainly better than San Juan Oaks imo.  I'd think about using your credentials as a writer to see if you could raise the bar of your trip.  Worth a shot.
2024 Line Up: Spanish Oaks GC, Cal Club, Cherokee Plantation, Huntercombe, West Sussex, Hankley Common, Royal St. Georges, Sunningdale New & Old, CC of the Rockies, Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, Formby, Royal Liverpool, Swinley Forest, St. George's Hill, Berkshire Red, Walton Heath Old, Austin GC,

The Harvester in Des Moines would be on the way and definitely worth a stop. Here's a link to thread about the course: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/320091
