89 was pretty decent.

Hoch missing the two footer and Faldo birdieing the second playoff hole in the playoff at the masters.  Plus Norman and Crenshaw mucking up 18.

Norman coming from 10 shots back at the British Open then losing the playoff after driving in the bunker and Calc sticking it to 5 feet.

Strange hanging on to become the first golfer in ages to win back to back US Opens.

and Mike Reid having a 3 stroke lead in the PGA with three to play and hitting one in the water on 16, holing a clutch putt for bogey, firing at a ridiculous flag on 17 to almost seal it, but then fluffing a chip and 3 putting from 15 feet to lose the lead after Payne Stewart birdies 18, then firing it to 8 feet on 18, then missing the putt.

I think 1962 was the greatest. Consider:

Masters - Arnold Palmer beats Gary Player in a playoff.
U.S. Open - Jack Nicklaus beats Arnold Palmer in a playoff for his first professional victory of any kind.
British Open - Arnold Palmer wins his second Open championship in a row and in so doing, this win more than the one the year before, reignites the popularity of the event for the American and world-wide audience.
PGA Championship - Gary Player wins.

This is the only year that every member of golf's "Big Three" win a major in the same year...

I challenge that this was a GREAT year for major finishes.

Masters - Perry has a faceplant.  The man is an amazing golfer and Cabrera is one of the greatest players of today's game(and ridiculously fun to watch to boot), but losing 2 strokes in 2 holes isn't fun to watch.

US Open-  Paring your way around and waiting for Phil to be Phil doesn't make an exciting finish.  On top of which it was on a Monday and was the wettest open in recent memory.

British- Fan favorite falls flat to guy who finished round almost 2 hours earlier.

PGA - Okay this one was truly exciting for all the right reasons.  Relative unknown stares down the super hero and hits the shots that matter.  Tiger is the one who faulters down the stretch which makes that sense of the inevitable become the light of hope...

By my account it wasn't an exciting year for major finishes, exciting is seeing someone charge up the leader board or 2 people trading birdies until someone finally slips up.  The year was full of collapses and heartbreak, and whether you were hoping for kenny and tom or not no one ever wants to be reminded of the look on either of their faces after the winning putt on 18.

Unfurtunately I can't think of a great year for major finishes(only been golf nuts for 2-3 years)so I will defer to those with more knowledge.

That's okay Chris. As long as you agree with us you must be brilliant!  :o
