A site meant for golf - Grover Beach California
« on: August 11, 2009, 03:21:33 PM »
I was just doing some Google Map/Google Image reconnaissance for my late-2010 USA trip and came across this pic that screamed "make me a golf course!!" as much as any pic ever has (you'll need to scroll right cos it's too big for the window).

The exact site pictured appears to be part of Pismo State Beach, where there is an unimpressive nine-holer near the beach.

Seems to have a good metro area and an airport nearby. Does anyone know the area? It looks like a great set of sand dunes!!

Paging Dan King!
As I recall he knows this area very well.. has a house not far from here.

In any case... our coast is littered with wonderful golfy-dunesy land like this.  Sadly however (for golf purposes) we have this thing called the California Coastal Commission... which rater effectively serves to prohibit development of said dunes.  I would not count on this - or anything else on our coast - being made into a golf course any time in our lives.

Of course I am just a golfer and I am speaking from zero real knowledge.  Many here have effective knowledge of all this... perhaps they will comment.

Scott,

Google the coastline north of Monterey around Seaside, Sand City and north to Pajaro Dunes. There are another dozen golf courses there somewhere.

Some other examples...

and here we go  ;D:

another one... 8)

and here we go again :P

And an arial Photograph, as with the first example, it's from a heathland region in northern Germany.

turned into a short, uphill par4, right, and a reachable, uphill par 5, left. At the par, 4 the golfer can carry the vast bunker to get close to the green with a good angle, or lay up safe from where he will have a bad angle and have to content with the tree fronting the green. The right hand side fairway bunkers at the par5 stops sliced balls from rolling into the heather, as I assume that the land slopes left to right. The second shot is then either played over the left hand side bunkers to be left with a short pitch and a good angle, or even to reach the green. Second shots layed up in the wide right hand side of the fairway will be left with a steeply uphill shot, a bad angle and a tree obstructing their view.....

I know it's not very good but I did that 2 years ago when I was bored. I simply took photos from Google earth and opened them with paint ;D

Unfortunately after the Dos Pueblos fiasco at the turn of the century I wouldn't bet on the CCC approving anything any time soon.

As a member of the Surfrider Foundation and this being near one of my favorite surfing breaks, a golf course is the last thing I want to see here.
