How does a lefty play the Redan? Or rather...
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:53:05 PM »
..how much do Gca's take into account the growing group of left handed golfers; obviously holes designed for a low running draw will be different for a leftie, or even more difficult than for a regular right handed player. In the old days there were I believe very few left handed players (a lot of lefties playing regular clubs of course), giving little reason for architects to take lefties into account while designing. Perhaps in modern days this has changed? I would like to hear from leftie golfers on this site whether they feel disadvantaged by golf course architecture on classics and/or modern courses, and from architects how much consideration they give to the left handed golfer. Especially from the left handed archies!

The two redans this high handicapper has played in GCA events were draws calculated to land short of the hole and trickle towards it. Both gave me makable birdie putts. Surprised the heck out of my companions familiar with my golf game.

Like the trick question, but there can surely only be one way. Play the course in reverse ;)

Can't be that hard just hit a low skanky cut haha.  Just tee it up high, hit it on the bottom of the clubface with a outside to in swing.  I'm sure it will come off low and run its way to the pin.

Since I play a Redan all the time on my home course, I have come to believe that it is better to play a cut INTO the slope rather than a draw that runs with the slope. Far easier to control the roll of the ball that way.

And any (righty) who regularly plays a draw fears left, and the Redan bunker runs away from you, right to left, so any slightly pulled or over cooked draw just goes deeper into the trap. "A slice will listen but there is no talking to a hook..."

Of course, today's aerial game permits this approach to a Redan, and that is a little sad...

Christian,

A good question.

Real redan's are strange for a lefty because the low running fade is not a shot that many have.   I've hit a few shots on various redan or redanish holes that I thought might end up perfect but the ball just doesn't run off a lefty fade like it does off a righty draw.   And there is no way I'd go with a draw over the bunkera and even if I did I doubt it would hold.  Maybe the best way is just to forget about the ball running and try to hit it high right at the hole or just right and short of it.   Either that or just play right of the bunker and try to deal with a long dowhill putt.

The reason I like the question is that it can easily be recast as: how does a righty play a reverse redan?   There are some good ones that go way back at least to Sleepy Hollow and arguably Merion.  LACC also has one that is terrific fun for the lefty but it has got to be a bear for the right-handed golfer.    As an aside, I think part of the misunderstanding of some of the reverse redan type holes is becuase the playing characteristics don't translate when the hole is reversed.

Golf history can be quite interesting if you just let your favorite legends go and allow the truth to take you where it will.

We have a reverse Redan at Pensacola but not a lot of tilt, so the play is a cut off the left front.  It's fun to watch the ball roll onto the green and keep working to the right.  You can see the slightly higher left front corner in this photo, plus the deep bunker at the greenside right and two annoying bunkers closer to the tee.  The hole is 245 from the tips and 215 from the blue tees.

I am inclined to think that the conventional Redan hole plays easier for lefties.  If the ground is firm enough to accept a running shot, then a regular fade should still run out enough, especially since the hole is played with a long iron or fairway wood.  Especially when greens or fast, I'd imagine a lot of running hooks into Redan holes run off the back.

As a lefty I think instead of trying to run up a shot on a reverse redan with a cut it is better to hit a slight fade and land it all the way on the green and let the green slope move the ball left.

Enough on the redan; apparently most lefties seem to be happy to be so even on a Redan. I wonder how being left-handed influences decisions in design. Are there any leftie-archie's? Was the original design of a reverse Redan done by a leftie? How do Righty-archies take left-handedness into account in their designs? (or not)....
