Are the resort courses worth playing?  Also, are there any other golf options worth playing on or near Sea Island other than the resort courses?

Seaside is fun.  There is also Ocean Forest and Frederica on the private side.

I agree that the Seaside is fun - and The Cloisters hotel is one of the nicest hotels that I have ever stayed in.

What other public sites in the area beyond Sea Island is desirable?

Is Jekyll Island acceptable? What about the south down to St. Marys?

The Brunswick CC is a recently restored (the Love Group) Ross course that has gotten very good reviews. It will be the first course I play next time I am in the area.

I thought Seaside was great fun, too, but at the rack rate, it's quite pricey.  I've usually been able to get pretty good deals, and I suspect that there are good deals available these days.

I always encourage people from this website to check out Sanctuary Cove just 20 miles to the south of Brunswick. A very unique design by Davis Love's group.

Laurel Island Links, another DL III layout in nearby Kingsland GA is a very nice public track that I played years ago.  I assume it is still in decent condition.

Deucie,

Have played all 3 courses at Sea Island. I prefer Seaside, it is a good test especially with wind.; then, Plantation. For the money,  the Resort Course is very forgettable. Some holes are bordered by homes.
Replay Seaside...have heard good things about Brunswick CC , but have not played it. Resort Course was closed due to cost cutting earlier this year, but is now open. However, if I go back it will not be on my short list to play.

Seaside is the only 1 of the 3 worth playing, it's very nice as are the accomodations but very very pricey
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The Retreat course will grow on you. It's really a very good golf course. I would say it's better than Plantation, but Seaside is really pretty incredible.

Sea Palms is not a bad course at all, you might want to check it out as it's nearby, but you really should see Sanctuary Cove

i've been fortunate to play all the courses at Sea Island, including OF and Frederica--and if it was my money, i'd play Seaside, and then play Seaside again.

I like Retreat and thought it was both fun and an easy walk--but the strategery is best, of all of them, at seaside.

I have played one of those courses but is was long before I was a "golfer". I do remember The Cloister being less than what I expected. In my opinion for the price Bandon and Pebble would give you more experience for the same price. Just speaking from experience and not being disrespectful to Sea Island but there is better golf for the same money in the US.

Pebble...Bandon....or Sea Island...well SI is only 3,000+ miles away.

The cost of the later 2 is probably comparable but the accommodations are not; The Lodge at Sea Island is spectacular and probably one of the top 5 places to stay in the US; the golf at Bandon is also not comparable to SI; I have yet to go but I am sure given the 3.5 courses at BD it is not in the same league as SI.

If you are going to SI I would play 54 a day at Seaside and never tire of it; it is in my personal Top 5; I LOVE it. How it does not get more respect by GD I will never understand, especially since Ocean Forest does.  The scenery, the strategy, the green complexes, the firm turf, the options off each tee, the bunkering, the short green to tee walks, etc....the list goes on. .... By the way if you can't tell I am a big fan of Seaside.

IMO Seaside is Pebble Beach and the other 2 courses are Poppy Hills (not Spyglass unfortunately); why play Poppy unless you for some reason (cost) can't play Pebble again and again.

I am pretty sure they have a deal where you stay at The Lodge for $395-$495 a night and get unlimited golf.  During the winter they have a deal for even less per night and you get unlimited golf.

I think the rack rate for Seaside is something like $325 but I found it was difficult to get on without being a guest of the hotel; this was over a year ago so with everything being the way it is it may be much easier now.

Kenny,
Yes, Go Dawgs!!!
Spent many years going to UGA vs UF games in Jax and staying at Sea Plams, then playing all other courses. But so long ago, memories are all that's left...memories of the way those course were then. When DLII was still there.
