I hate to say it, but I think that the trend will be to the flat or the wedge shape markers, mostly for safety.  Every so often, someone riccochets a ball off a fw tee marker and puts an eye out.  Whether that small chance is worth the reduced visibility I am not the one to say.

Of course, we could go all high tech and use laser beams or holographs which would warn you when you tee up ahead of the markers.

These

are precisely the type I can't stand because you can't always see which color is which from the sides.

My club has these. They are everywhere.

I like the simple wood ones as well, although Mike was right about Champions

The course at the Rock Island (IL) Arsenal used to have spent munitions/ordnance with the tail painted the appropriate color.  I haven't been back in 15+ years, though - so I don't know if the tradition still stands.  Loved it, though.

Always liked Castle Pines' designation for its tees - not color, but rather number of "birds" - you play from the 1-birds, 2-birds, etc.  The actual markers are pretty ho-hum, though.

I also like the beveled branch markers Jason C. loathes, but only because they allow for creative recoveries and shotmaking in "The Waiting Game" I like to play with partners to pass the time during slow rounds.
