St. Andrews - New

Agreed.  Same for Jubilee.  They suffer by being next door to TOC.
i couldn't agree more. If the new course was anywhere else in the world it would be regarded as one of the greats.

Riverfront gets left off a lot of lists in Virginia ... perhaps too many McMansions for wall paper.

Anthony Gray,

I don't know if you mean underrated in the context of the ratings with the magazines or under the radar.

There seems to be a good number of courses that are virtually unknown outside of their particular locale.
Besides the known clubs toward Northern NJ like

Ridgewood
Baltusrol Upper
Baltusrol Lower
Plainfield
Somerset Hills

There are

Essex County
The Knoll
Mt Ridge
Hackensack
Forsgate
Hollywood.
Montclair
Alpine
Canoe Brook

Just to name a few.

In addition to these courses there are a good number of sporty, fun courses to play, such as

Preakness Hills
Bedens Brook
Bowling Green
Deal
Echo Lake
Essex Fells
Rock Spring
Fairmont
Morris County
Glen Ridge
Knickerbocker
Lake Mohawk
Manasquan River
Rockaway River
Rumson
Shackamaxon
Spring Lake
Springdale
Suburban
Upper Montclair

And others which I've forgotten or haven't played.

I haven't read through all of this thread but two courses I've played this year which fit into this category are Silloth and Goswick.  Both are excellent links courses which tend to go under the radar, probably due to their location.  Silloth as it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.   Whilst Goswick is easy to reach just off the A1 most golfers are speeding past, either to get to the links of East Lothian or on their way back from them.

If Sean Arble has already posted I'm sure Beau Desert will also have got a mention!
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc
