Having has too many gin and tonics the question arose, what games/sports require going backwards to win?

I came up with swimming/backstroke.

Tug-o-war.

Any sculling event.

Nearly all hockey players skate backwards at least half the time in the games.

There used to be a roller skating event where skaters would criss-cross weave some cones while skating backward.  Alas, Wide World of Sports isn't so hard up for sports any more.

29. Done twice by Neal Lancaster, in 1994 on the front 9 at Oakmont and in 1995 on the back 9 at Shinnecock Hills. I know Neal personally, funny guy.

Yes.  It is amazing that the low score was matched by the same guy.  And a rank-and-file pro at that.  I think his dad and friends watched him for 63 holes or something and then he finished with a gerat nine to T4 or something after they stopped!

I want to say there is more to it than that. In 1994, I want to say he started on #10 that Friday, so he wound up having to shoot the 29 to make the cut by a shot or two. Then in 1995 at Shinnecock he shot the 29 on the back 9 on Sunday to move up a really long ways on the leaderboard. Neal can play as well as anyone when he's on his game. He's a damn good ball striker, but his putting has let him down over the years. Last year I followed him for a few holes at the Rex Open; on the 12th tee I heard him comment he'd hit the first 11 greens in regulation and was even par. I think he wound up shooting -1 or -2 but hit 16 or 17 greens and the ones he missed he was like 2 inches on the fringe within 10-15 feet of the cup. If he could putt and his head was still with him, he could still be a real contender on the tour.

Bob, Frank Conner PLAYED IN the U.S. Open for tennis.  He and Ellsworth Vines (I think, maybe it was Bill Tilden) are the only two that competed in the US Open for tennis and golf.  There is a US Open champion in another sport that played the Senior Tour.  Good guess, but no cigar.

I don't know anything about field hockey.  I'd assume you can play L or R like regular hockey.  No?  If field hockey is a good answer then there are three sports.  It is similar to one of them.

John Moore, not one of them.  There are no restrictions on which side you use in soccer.

The Neal Lancaster trivia question has always been one of my favorites and one of the best in all of sports. The fact he did it twice is remarkable.  Simply amazing and done on two of the best US Open venues.  Whenever I ask anyone the question they are amazed at the answer even if they have heard of Neal.

Jai Alai requires that you play with your right hand because a left-hander would have an easier time plucking balls against the side wall and polo is obvious once you think about it.  You can't have colliding horses!

Excellent.  Because throwing pitches with a doctored ball was deemed a skill, each team was allowed to grandfather one player that could continue to throw them for the remainder of his career.  Of those named, nobody outlasted Grimes.
