Correct Bunker Depth?
« on: May 10, 2002, 07:58:51 AM »
At 6:10 am this morning I had a golfing epiphany. I parked on the street and played "the horseshoe" as we call it, holes 3,4,& 5. I do this early morning therapy quite often on the way to work, usually I play the holes 1 or 2 over par and get in the car and leave, but this morning I birdied all 3. The 6th hole is right across the street, a short par4, so as I was on a roll ,I deviated from my normal routine and decided to play 6.

The view of the hole from the tee in the early morning light is exceptional, there is a row of bunkers down the right side that epitomize our restoration effort(they can be seen in the course profile section of GCA Charles River). Until this morning I hadn't realized that no sand can be seen from the tee just the grass mounding, cool.

I kind of healed a lazy fade out there and didn't see the ball bounce which means that I had not cleared the last fairway bunker,  a sure bogey or worse as the bunker is 145 yards from the green and deep, I don't have a 145 wedge or nine iron in my golfing arsenal.

Sooo, I went loping down the fairway smugly reveling in the brilliance of the restored bunkers and the fact that they were again a real hazard because of the fact that they were back to their original depth, yada, yada, yada.

As I walked closer to the last bunker, BAM! The epiphany hit me, and this little diddy popped in to my head:

             Twinkle twinkle little star
I hit it in the bunker, and found a f...... CAR!

To my amazement there was a Honda Civic in the bunker and I couldn't see it until I was twenty yards from the bunker!

Apparently a local group of college students became ah, "disoriented" in the rain storm last night and drove in to the bunker via the maintainence shed service road. At least that's the story the Newton cops got.

At any rate, I think golf has a new tool for determining the correct depth of fairway bunkers on short par 4's, the Honda Civic. It may become as useful as the stimpmeter. I broached the subject with our superintendent when he arrived on the scene, but he was too busy laughing his ass off to offer an opinion. Seems simple enough to me. What a strange world we live in.

Ed, that's priceless! I've heard of "buried Volkswagon" mounds on greens, but nothing like this! ;D

Great little story. Thanks.

Was it one of the dinky older Civics, or this year's bigger model?

Oh, and one more thing: How'd you finish the hole?  ::)

Ed,

That's priceless.  ;D

One question, though.  Did the college students get up an down from there? ;)

As far as bunker depth, the Honda Civic might be a little smallish, doncha think?

After seeing Ran at PGA West last week, I propose that "Ran-height" is about right for most bunkers.  I think a cardboard cutout measuring device of our founder should become the de rigeur standard adopted internationally for minimum bunker depth.

Hopefully soon I'll have some pics developed to illustrate my point. ;)

Dan,

It was an "ancient" Civic, I made 7 on the hole, had to chip out backwards, fatted a 7 iron in to the death bunker right of the green, thinned one out to the back of the green and two putted. Even par for the 4 holes, 3 birdies and a triple, perfect.

The Triple A guy was scratching his head on how to get the car out when I left. ::)

You might tell the guys at Triple-A:

I've heard that Rees Jones is pretty good at getting Civics out of bunkers. If he has to DIG 'em out, his usual technique is pile up the dirt somewhere nearby, plant some grass seed, and voila! Instant containment mound!

(Just teasin', Patrick! As you know, I have no opinion of Rees's mounds -- having seen them only in pictures!)

Actually this thread reminded me of oor Patrick too!

I wonder what sorts of cars would be needed for bunkers at various positions on the hole if the Mucci-progressive depth system is used?
