1,496 of us are waiting for a full report!  ;D

Let me just say that if there's a market for whitewater rafting & golf combined, I can't imagine a better destination than that patch of heaven in the north GA mountains.  I had never seen the Ocoee before (other than the '96 Olympics coverage) and really enjoyed the drive down and back riding in the mad dentist's convertible watching all the rafting/kayaking enthusiasts out there undoubtedly having the time of their lives on that river.

Golf course was even more of a surprise as it exceeded all our expectations.  More to come...

Well I think my point is proven again......
Four guys go to play one of the few new courses built this year....and you guys let it get to half way down the second page.....another opens in roanoke and you can't dare compare it to anything in Nebraska.....why does this site behave this way....would rather bitch over which dude put the shower heads in the bunkers at Merion than talk about anew course in the SOUTH....
We can talk greatness in NE..California or Midwest ....OH Well
.now I really don't have a dog in this fight but I can bitch because it certainly is not self promotion....

Mike, there is another thread on page 1 with photo tour and very positive comments.

When are you coming down to see another really good new course in the SOUTH?

I don't know anything about this course. I've played a coupe of Griffins courses. And while there is some hyperbole in the website, here is something that I think all of us can at least think is ok:

Green fees:

Mon - Thurs (includes Green Fees and Cart Fees) $49
Mon - Thurs after 1:00 (includes Green Fees and Cart Fees) $39

Fri - Sun (includes Green Fees and Cart Fees) $59
Fri - Sun after 1:00 (includes Green Fees and Cart Fees) $49

Walking is allowed anytime during the week, and after 1:00 on the weekends

That, for the most part, is pretty good. There are some reasonable fees, no crazy fees and there are a lot of times when people can walk. That should be applauded.

Hey! I am a past president of ASGCA and I can tell you that the next job I get because of this will be the first job I get because of this.......If it's an advantage, I think I would know about it!

BTW, in Florida, they tape interviews of all public projects which you can order. I did. As it happened, all five of us were presidents, future presidents or the president of ASGCA at the time.  We all mentioned it. In no case was there an audible "oooooh" coming from the crowd.

As far as getting the job, its a non starter.

Jeff this whole series of posts have me confussed. I again hope the course does well but not sure it is the sort of course we look to for conversation study or inspiration. I hope you at least get an extra 20 something for being the Pres.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this.  What IS the sort of course we look to for conversation, study, or inspiration?

To my friends that played Old Union:

Would you say the course is walkable?  I know Eric said the course is fairly level, how are distances from the greens to the next tee boxes?

I would like to study this course!

Very walkable. The temporary clubhouse is very far from the first tee but after getting to the course it is very walkable.

I think this course looks very interesting and like a job well done by DG.

I think the intersting part to discuss is how his shaping has evolved from his work a decade ago. It is certainly more random and interesting in my book than Fox Hollow or some of his other best courses.

The other interesting thing to discuss is that it appears to be maximilist shaping, with sharp banks for shadows, etc.  How does this fit in with the percieved notion that minimalism is taking over?  Has a new trend emerged, going back to a blend of 90's shaping and some new looks?  Is this peculiar to DG or does it mean something in the larger picture of gca, esp. if this course is successful.

And lastly, what does this prove about who did what at Merion? (insert smiley)

  Jeff,

Well stated. If minimaliism was adapted at this site it would be boreing. The land is flat and lacks contours so the shaping and sharp edges give nice aesthetic appeal. Without some of theses bold features you would have a "minimal" course that looks uninspired.

The look of this work definitely is a departure from my experience with other work from Griffiths.  I used to play his Fox Hollow Course as my home course for awhile in Lakewood, CO and really enjoyed it.  No sharp edges on that course, but the property in Lakewood has much more movement on 2 of the three 9s that Old Union appears to have from these photos.  Will the sharp edges to the shaping of the bunkers stay sharp over time, or will they round off with age and time?

Mike,
Hasn't news traveled to your part of the country regarding the settling of the dispute between the Union and the Confederacy.  If not, I've got some bad news for you...

Cheers,
Brad

Baloney, and the same to you AG. ;D

Courses in the south get a lot of love and exposure on this site....and so do their architects.

....and 'a' course in Roanoke isn't getting compared to 'anything' in Nebraska because it can't be compared,  where are the sand hills of Virginia?

There is a wandering creek that goes throughout the property that does not come into play. I wonder if there is an environmental issue that kept it from being part of the design.
