Got a look (sort of) at Brauer's latest --Firekeeper
« on: July 13, 2009, 01:29:53 AM »
It rained 1.5 inches today, and our course was closed until afternoon, so my wife and I took a road trip to play Spring Creek GC in Seneca, KS. On the way back she suggested we take a look at how the new Jeff Brauer and Notah Begay project was coming.

The Firekeeper course is across the road from the Prairie Band Pottawatomie Tribe's casino, and although we only drove around the perimeter, it looks like Landscapes Unlimited has already moved lot of dirt.

This appears to be another big golf course on the scale of Brauer's Colbert Hills (which I played Saturday). One difference is that it's on a much much less severe property. Even without some of the long green to tee treks, Colbert would be a beast to walk, but Firekeeper is more reasonable. They are already touting is a no-housing course that's easy to walk.

Obviously, at this stage, and looking at a muddy site from the outside it's not possible to tell much about the routing, but it looks like an interesting project.

Don't expect to find much here http://www.firekeepergolf.com

Here's some video from the local TV station

They say it's opening next summer.

I played golf with Jeff a few weeks ago down in Dallas, and he had to bolt that afternoon for a quick trip to KS...guess things are cranking out there!

Just got back from another quick trip.  I am trying to get some pictures from the crew if anyone is interested because its one of the few new courses out there and doesn't think it would be too "self promotional." Of course, dirt pix are hard to see anything.

95% of the bulk dirt has been moved and they have shaped holes 1-7 and 11, and irrigated 3-5, plus 11, with the others starting tomorrow.  There has been signifigant eartmoving only on 4 fairways, and the rest pretty well follows the land, with only minor shaping other than greens, tees and bunkers.

Evan,

It's still over 100 here.  I walked another Texas project Monday, and it was 105, but the good news is, its so hot and dry there were very few bugs.  I flew right up to Topeka and felt sorry for the guy next to me on the plane.

Took a few pictures yesterday, now that some of the seed is popping. I thought the inhabitants of the field next door might be golf club atlas spies!
I figure I would put a few out there, since they were obviously going to be on the web soon anyway. ;)

The first picture is the 4th hole tee shot, one of the few blind tee shots I have ever designed.  We saddled the fw a bit as a directional device for the safe shot, but of course, the real shot is over the deep bunker.  After the grass is all in, we are going to go in and raise the sand line on that bunker.  While practical to keep the sand down at the bottom, its not as dramatic as Notah and I would like.

The second shot is the first hole.  We actually took out a bunker on the left side of the fw at the last minute to make it less challenging an opener.

The third shot is from the back nine - the pinched second landing area on the par 5 11th.  We actually made a last minute bunker subtraction left of the green to encourage more folks to go for it in two.  The area that shows up as dark dirt just over the right bunker is where the bunker was.

It was an interesting discussion - Notah pointed out that a 540 yard par 5 is not a giveaway even on the Tour, except for the top guys, and the top guys who are playing their best.  Its still 280/290 and 250/260 for many, many tour pros.  A 250 yard shot to this tiny green is not very inviting, thus, the bunker removal in favor of fw to allow a small run on.  Not much of the green shows up in this phot (location governed by trees to block out morning sun)

Jeff, why not a marker pole on the horizon there at #4, like half the courses in Scotland?  ;D

Hi Jeff,
I assume you are using zoysia in the fairways?  If so, do you find any challenges or nuances with the design and construction using zoysia?  I am only 45 minutes from Topeka, but moved down from bent grass fairway country and took a little while to get used to playing that type of grass.
When is the opening date again?

Jason,

You will be happy to be playing on bent fw some time next summer at Firekeeper.  Not enough money for zoysia sod, and I had great success with bent fw even further south in Newton, KS.  The last few holes are still being grassed, so its hard to pin down an opening date, but I doubt it will be early summer. Probably more like August 1.

Since the zoysia was out, and the fescue/low mow blue/bent decision took so long to make, there were a few design features like chipping areas that I didn't do, just because I wasn't sure it would be bent.  There was more discussion of grass varieties on this job than you hear in a stoners college dorm room......

Do we have an archive of these - this certainly deserves HOF consideration!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the course looks nice and all but I want I really want to know is where can I find one of these women that would VOLUNTEER to go look at a still-under-construction golf course? And think it's fun?

Side note - my HCP has dropped 1.3 points since I broke up with my girlfriend in August.

Looking good Jeff!

Should be a shoe in for Top Ten New of 2010...or will that be Top Five, or Three....doubt there will be 10 new.
Seriously.

We [Lanny Wadkins Golf Design] will be opening another course Texas course late next summer....Black Jack's Crossing...in Lajitas, Texas, on a site that only Jim Engh could love [at least according to the taste for carts that many have on this site].

I'd love to show you mine sometime, if you would show me yours.

Keep carrying the fire for all of us in the Game.

All the best.

Sometimes you just get lucky...  ;D

It does help if you look for your mate on a golf course, however.

We tell people all the time that we got married so we could play in a golf tournament.  We were living in South Dakota, and had been together for about five years, and I asked her one day, "Is the State Husband and Wife a good enough reason to get married?"

She said yes, and the rest is history. FWIW, we were 6th that year, and never improved on that finish. Been married 15 years now.
