Heading to Turnberry Thursday...
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:42:35 PM »
Any GCA-type gatherings?  Will be at the tourney Sat afternoon and Sunday.

Also, have golf scheduled at Prestwick, Dundonald Links, Western Gailes, and Turnberry (yes, Monday morning after the Open with a media friend).  We have openings for at least one, maybe two additional rounds.  Any recommendations? (couldn't work Royal Troon in).

Also, am open to any bar/pub/restaurant reco's too--it's my first trip to the area.

Thanks!

Jason, I was in St Andrews during the 2005 Open, and if Turnberry is anything like St A, it will be very difficult to get a proper meal in a restaurant during the Championship.  There will be lots more people than seats.  We were lucky enough to have local relatives of our friends who came with us, otherwise it would have been take away fish and chips or fighting our way into a pub!

Regardless of all that, there is nothing much better than being on the scene during the Open.  Have fun!

I hope you packed wet weather gear.
Southerness is south, but a full day trip. With the druthers I'd take a trip to Machrihanish/Machrihanish Dunes by air or fast ferry. Have not played near Glasgow.

Bill-
Thanks for the heads up.  I spoke with my media friend who is already there earlier today and he said exactly the same thing--it's a bit crowded, and the tournament hasn't even started yet.

Still looking to fill one more round, no clue where to play.

Dundonald Links--any word?  We're playing there Saturday morning before heading over to the tourney.

Jason:

I went to Dundonald 3 years ago...it was a friendly, welcoming pleasant round...nothing spectacular, however.  It is not as good, IMO, as the adjacent Western Gailes and nowhere close to Prestwick.  While I am certain you would enjoy your round at Dundonald, I would play Prestwick twice instead, if possible.

Here are a few pictures of my day at Dundonald with my father-in-law (shown here with his very kind caddie):

Hope this helps...feel free to send an IM if I can be of more assistance...Have a great time.

Bart
