as an added bonus at Blue Mound, see if you can visit the interior of the clubhouse where you will find one of the great golf art collections you will find out of the USGA museum.

A wealthly member many years ago purchased this entire UK (Scotland) collection from an individual

I've had pretty close connections with the club for years (presentations, work with club history, etc) and they were kind enuf to share a lot with me

If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

Bumping for a reason...

The 2010 Western Junior Championship will be held at Blue Mound this month, June 21-25. The only Raynor-designed course in Wisconsin, it's also one of only two courses in the state to host a major championship (Gene Sarazen won the PGA at BMound in 1933). It's a great opportunity for GCA fans in the area to see one of Raynor's lesser-known courses, which the club has worked hard to maintain and restore in the traditional Raynor style with interesting bunkering and several Raynor templates. The Western Junior will also serve as a primer for next year's US Amateur, as Blue Mound was selected as the secondary course for the 2011 championship, to be held at Erin Hills (in its much-discussed dry run for the US Open).

Details here: http://www.westernjunior.com/

Blue Mound is easily accessible via major Milwaukee-area highways. I plan to get over there for at least a day or two.

David;  before you get too tough on your Greenkeeper be aware that seeding before the soil temps reach an acceptable level for germination leads to a very small dividend in grass recovery.  It feels better to be doing something but it costs money.  Only recently have the soil temps reached appropriate levels in the Chicago north shore which I suspect is similar to Kenosha.  Similar problems at courses which suffere winter kill due to significant icing this winter.

Should be a fascinating tournament to watch with Raynor's beguiling green contours squaring off against the young bombers.

Another bump for GCA junkies...

The Western Junior gets underway next week (June 21-25) at Blue Mound G&CC near Milwaukee, Seth Raynor's only course in Wisconsin. Raynor didn't do a whole lot in the Midwest, but what he did do -- Chicago, Carmargo, Shoreacres and Blue Mound -- is very well-regarded.

Tournament details here, including a link to a list of players, some of the best juniors in the country. Practice round Monday, with stroke play Tuesday through Friday:

The course website; clicking on "golf scorecard" link provides a pretty decent tour:

I'm headed over Tuesday and will be there mid-morning until mid-afternoon; anyone interested in getting together for lunch, IM or email me.

Needless to say, Western Golf Association events raise money for a great cause in the Evans Scholarship program.
