Now what a freakin' second.

Mayhugh - the hero of all golf wh*res - not only gets to Lawsonia... he makes it to this gig... and word is he's gonna be here in California in a few weeks... AND HE MAKES AN ACE AT KINGSLEY?

Ok fine, it's unfair enough the guy gets to live all of our golf dreams.  But an ace at this gig?

PLEASE TELL ME HE PAID HANDSOMELY FOR IT AT THE BAR.

PLEASE.

Tom H.

ps - John - we gotta get together somehow when you are out here.  Your legend just needs to be seen in person a bit better than the very brief meeting we once had at KP.  Jordan has instructions to ignore my whining about not being able to play, and make it happen.  Email me with details.  huckaby72@yahoo.com

My wife thought I was crazy when I told her I was heading up north to play golf with 30 people I’d never met.

I find it easier to just tell my wife I'm headed to Argentina to cry with my mistress.

Bogey

VERY good Mike! :D

Well, he did pick up lunch (and drinks) for our entire group of 7, which was very generous of him!!

Geez, man, gimme some credit, will 'ya?   ;D  The back tee on #16 is 205... the ultimate ground game option on a redan hole...

I'd pay cash money to try and see someone broomstick stroke one 200+ yards.

Much as I would have liked to ace #2 (or 5 or 9 or 11 or 16) at Kingsley, the numbers worked out much better at Greywalls.  There would have been a whole lot more drinks to buy at Kingsley on Saturday night.  ;)

I have to wonder in the last 15 years -- how many courses that have opened in the States can really say they provide a more compelling design than The Kingsley Club ?

The place provides a first rate show from the very first tee shot and the land is truly inspirational.

How the place doesn't have a spot in any top overall 50 in the USA really astounds me.

p.s. On the public side Greywalls is no less compelling.

John, I had an ace at the Kings Putter in 2005 and the cost was minimal.  Some of those GCAers actually ordered soft drinks!  :o ;D

I just wanted to thank all the hosts and everyone at the club.  The conditions were amazing.  I've never played a course in America that played that firm and fast.  Brian made me feel so at home I wish I could have him at my holiday dinners.

In the last few months I've gone through some pretty difficult things.  Death, divorce, finance, etc...  For two days I felt like a kid again.  It truly made me remember why I play this game.  Not for a score or to win a $10 nassau.  Golf is for enjoyment and a little bit of tranquility in a very hectic world.  This was my first GCA outing and I couldn't be more happy with how it turned out.  Thanks to everyone for a great weekend.

I did putt it a lot on Greywalls and Kingsley but nothing over 90 yards for me (on #4 I did).

#16, back tees.  Shivas steps up and plays the perfect Redan shot, but as he said, it did roll over the back left edge of the green.  I wonder if Karsten Solheim ever had that in mind when he designed his putters!

Mike Hendren-I have no idea what Betty White has to do with Kingsley. In fact, that reference rubs me the wrong way.

First of all, many thanks to Mike and John for putting this event together. Kingsley is a special place and a wonderful example of what is possible with a terrific piece of property and an imaginative architect who is willing to take some chances. The golf course is terrific and the fellowship and discussion was top notch (as it usually is at these get togethers).

What struck me after the three rounds I played:

-The options presented around the greens. Off the green, it was possible to putt, chip or try to fly/flop a shot near the hole.  Many times the most direct route to the hole was not necessarily the best way of getting to the pin, The ability to see this and utilize it increases with the number of times one sees the golf course. There is definitely a learning curve at Kingsley (as with most great golf courses). Unfortunately, I was never a very good student.

-The greensites themselves. To me, all situated marvelously and seemingly naturally. The greens filled with great internal movement and contours...testing both one's resolve and imagination in getting to the hole. I would still like to see a back right pin location on #12.

-The variety of the holes. Jason Topp summarized it well but the mix works well and there are several changes of pace. The bunkerless #12 which serves as a transition to the wooded portion of the course. The very fine long par four #15 with a very open tee shot and a most demanding approach.

-The looks off the tees: some stunning, some revealing, some unsettling to the psyche (particularly for a first time player looking at #7, #12 and #14) but all requiring some thought, analysis and execution.

For me, it passes the ultimate test of what a golf course should do...it makes me want to come back.

There most definitely are NOT 50 courses in the US better than Kingsley Club. I would think that even the participants on the Merion threads could agree upon this point. ;D

Following first round actionon Saturday, the players repaired to the deck for libations, some excellent burgers and some Q & A with Mr. DeVries. Mike had the good sense to extend the "happy hour" a bit, which had the desired effect as all weapons were holstered throughout the discussion. Notice Joe Hancock's back was not exposed to anyone in the crowd, a lesson he learned from his work in New York.

I can not think of prettier setting. It was great fun.

The best part about that picture of Joe is Bogey sleeping in the background.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.
