cart paths

What course has the best non-cart path cart paths, ie mostly all natural...... Shinnecook Hills!!!... others??

Could SH maintain them as such if it had more play??
Would love to hear comments form those that understand the issues. Thank You

In my untutored opinion, unpaved cart paths driven by educated drivers can be better for the turf than paved cart paths.  Clubs which enforce the 90 degree rule always seem to have greatly compacted turf at the 150-yard zone, as that seems to be where a variety of tee shots from multiple tees wind up.  (Is this a modern design theme?)  An observed "scatter" policy seems to result in less concentrated traffic.

Kingsley Club has some pretty unobtrusive cart paths (unpaved).

     If one has to have cart paths on their course one needs to visit Desert Forest to see how utterly and completely unobtrusive the paths can be.

Brad, do you mean continuous paths or any sort of segmented system entering and exiting tees and greens?  I just looked at Prairie Dunes write-up again and noted on many of those pictures that there were places where paths appear to be unfortunately conspicuous and misplaced for such a fine course with a very specific natural prairie design theme.

RJ, you are correct,(was also talking about a segmented system) hoping that the club will look at this issue sometime in the future. That is one of the reasons the paths at Shinnecock struck me as so perfect. PD with the cart paths better  hidden and/or more natural would be even more wonderful.

**neither PD or SH have traditional or by any means complete paths, just that SH natural paths look so good and "natural" while the "non natural" look tends to lend itself to unwanted attention that takes away from the beauty of certain parts of the course. SH has also used a concrete path on hills that allows for grass and sand to cover and grow through but still provides traction.
