Westwood Country Club -- St. Louis, MO
« on: May 18, 2009, 11:15:09 PM »
I am a new to this site and have been asked by several GCA members to post pictures and add commentary about Westwood Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.  I took pictures over this past weekend and my wife managed to load them on my Apple hard drive (i-Photo).  I believe the photos are quite large and I have no idea how to load them on a new thread, despite the recently posted instructions.
If someone would kindly let me know how to do this in a systematic way, as if I were a five year old, I would be happy to comply with these requests.
Some info about me:
Name: David Amarnek
Age: 52
Handicap: 7
Occupation: Podiatrist/ technophobe
Member: Westwood and RCPGC
Married with a 4.5 yo boy who can't wait to play with daddy.  Our club requires children 5 and over to play.
Would enjoy getting together with anyone associated with GCA either living in STL or visiting.
Regards,
David

I wish I would have seen this two weeks ago.  I was just in St. Louis for the first time in several years for a conference two weeks ago.  I got to play a fair ammount of golf (as the conference was pretty poorly attended in the current economic conditions) and managed to eat about 3 times by body weight in Imo's pizza in the course of 5 days.

as far as the directions for posting pictures do exactly as I tell you below, except that you need to type the square brackets like [ and ] instead of the parenthesis that I will use like ( and ).  I cant type with the brackets or it will think I am trying to post a picture.

You can cut and past the picture name.  But basically to post a photo with the name of picturename.jpg you would need to need to type this:

(img)picturename.jpg(/img)

Again except using brackets.

I hope this helps, I look forward to seeing pictures.  I think I knew someone that was a member out there a few years ago, but I never got a chance to see it.

Welcome aboard David.

I have recently found that the best way to post pics is to shrink the photo to no larger than 800x600 and save it to your computer.  When posting, an additional options hyperlink will be in blue at the bottom left of your text box.  Click on that link and follow the prompts to attach a photo from your computer.

If that doesn't work, ask someone else because thats about all I know.   ;D

OK cool he probably knows more than I do.  I was quoting the old way that I knew to insert a photo into the body of your text.  Maybe that has changed.  Sorry.

Turboe,

Sounds like a fighter pilot callsign!!

I wasn't overriding you, just stating the only way I know how.  But thanks for bringing me up to speed on the "old" way.  Every instructor should know at least two ways to teach the same thing ;D

Thanks for the advice, especially about the maximum size to use.  I'll give it a try tomorrow.
I'm a Philly transplant and cannot understand how anyone could eat an Imo's pizza.  Fake cheese (Provel) and sauce on a cracker.  Raconelli's and Pi (Obama's favorite) are decent.  In my opinion, dining is not great in the STL metro area; no deli to speak of and no cheese steaks or hoagies.  Most ethnic food choices are satisfactory at best with Chinese/Thai/Vietnamese quite disappointing. There is a hidden gem in South city: Natasha's Kebob International.  Great Persian food with charming owners.

David- Welcome to the site!

My future in-laws live right down the street from Westwood and have heard good things about the course. It would be very cool to see pictures. I am also a newbie when it comes to posting pics so I'm probably not the best to give directions.

Hope all is well down in STL.

Brian,
Thanks for the welcome.
I should clarify one thing, I came to STL to do my residency in '81, so I am well versed in the awful St. Louis summers.
My brother came to visit last year and we played Westwood and SLCC.  We walked and carried our bags in temps > 100* and matching humidity....tough!
I am looking forward to meet and play with anyone on GCA.

I am lost trying to reduce the size of the pictures to the recommended 800 x 600 on iPhoto and attach them to this thread.
I also tried to use Photobucket; however I believe the volume of data is too large to download.
My last thought, other than getting some serious tutoring on apple/iPhoto/GCA is to take my camera to a camera store and have them put the pictures on a disc and send it to someone with my commentary so that a more talented GCA member can post them for me.
I am determined to present Westwood to the group and will get it done.  I'm sorry for the delay and still welcome any further advice.

Pat, let me know when you visit your future in-laws.

David

you can either email them to me (one at a time if they are that big) depending on how many you wanted to post, and I can shrink them and post them for you if you want.  Or you can download a program called Irfanview (from Cnet.com or downloads.com) for free and it easily resizes pictures for you.

Let me know.

Who designed the course?

Daryl,
Thanks for the offer.  I'll make a last attempt during the holiday weekend and if that fails, then I'll take you up on that.
Jeff,
Thanks for the photos!  Did you detail your descriptions of all 18 holes in a previous thread?  If that was you, they were pretty spot on!
The fiirst picture is the view from the elevated 5th tee, long par 5 and very difficult to hit in 2.  Like so many holes at Westwood, the greens are elevated and it's necessary to have a red-white and blue flag system to know where to aim.  Likewise with too many of the holes, there are an over-abundance of trees.  We are starting to remove them and it is making a difference, especiially on the left side of #4.
I don't recognize the second photo, ? sixth green.
The third photo is a view from the 13th tee looking uphill to a fun par 5 which is quite reachable, but very well protected.  It's the first of two consecutive par 5's in reverse direction.
The fourth photo illustrates the 13th tee and the 14th fairway on the right.  The view is from the 12th green, a short drop shot par three to a very narrow green which is also well-protected.  My nemesis hole as I draw the ball and it seems like there is always a right to left breeze.
The fifth picture shows the approach to the first green.  Sharp left dogleg (see on Google earth!) and requires drive of at least 250 to get a clear shot.  A lot of trees on the left.
Photo six is a view from the 3rd tee box to an uphill par 4 (typical) with out of bounds on the right and trees left.
The last picture indicates that it must be at least two years old as it depicts the forest on the right side of #10 and the fairway bunker that has been moved to the right side (more faders @ WCC ?) and further up.  Great hole.
My favorite is #17 with a strategic creek running diagonally forward from left to right and splits a wide fairway.  Uphill shot (major) to a well-protected green with plenty of slope.  I'll get more pictures on soon!
As for the designer, it was Harold Paddock out of Ohio, I believe.  Modified over the years only slightly.  Tillinghast came by to make suggestions re. bunkering and controlling costs, as I believe he did on a number of courses around wartime.  There were two 18 hole courses designed, but WW II changed things and one was retained, with holes from both.  The Championship course hosted 2 Western Opens and was in contention for a PGA Championship and a U.S. Open.  I think it would be ideal for a USGA amateur event.
We have a 9 hole "Short Course" designed by a former Superi with two short par 4's and the remainder par 3's.  I hear the course will be redone shortly.
David
We celebrated our 100th anniversary last year and have a wonderful book detailing the development of the club and course.

David,
I think that photo is number six taken not far from the island tee on 13.

I am glad the trees are coming down. I have been ranting to Dr. Samuels about the overgrowth for the last four seasons... More pics to come.

Jeff, Great to hear that you'll be posting additional pics.
As for the trees, there's a long way to go and hopefully the improvement on #4 that everyone enjoys will lead to more.

Another welcome from a fellow St. Louisan.  Sorry you don't like Imo's, but hopefully the toasted ravioli and gooey butter cake make up for it.  Fortel's is another local pizza option that is different from Imo's.  We like Everest in the "Grove" - mix of Chinese/Indian/Nepalese food.  Something different.

Definately need a get together of St. Louis GCA folks.

Steve,
A get together sounds like a fine idea.
Everest is an excellent restaurant, only there once but it was wonderful and we have to return.

Jeff,
Ran into Larry today... small world!
Let's see those pics when you have a chance.

I've given up.
Rather than suffering further humiliation, I'll instead offer to host up to three people at Westwood.  Hopefully one will have the skills necessary to post some photos of the event.
Let me know if any of you are interested and we'll have a mini GCA get-together.  weekends are out and Fridays would be best for me.
