Mollica's RM West stretch wins on the strength of its individual holes as well at the other Matt's criterion.

Pebble 6-9 the finest stretch, really? Exhilirating golf scenery, but from an architectural perspective far far short of RMW and probably a fair number of other stretches as well.

Four is hard. I can think of a dozen cracking three-hole stretches, but very few quartets that are all shit-hot holes in their own right.

My favorites from what I've played:

- Agree w/ Tom D on Crystal Downs 5-8, but would also throw in there 12-15

- Oakmont 1-4 or 8-11

- Kingsley 1-4 or 13-16

- Old Course 11-14

- Arcadia Bluffs 10-13

...kinda faded into "my favorite 4 hole stretches" vs "the finest four consecutive in the world"...ah well

I agree with you, probably because my favorite stretch fits your definition exactly.  To me, this stretch lies at Muirfield: holes 15-18.  Fifteen is around 400 yards, sixteen around 185, seventeen 535  (reachable with a good drive), and eighteen is a brute of a par 4 with bunkers guarding against missed drives and second shots.  All the holes are well bunkered and have green contours such that missed shots that find the green are not guaranteed two putts.

Shamelessly I offer holes 15-18 on The Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol

Actually holes 3-6 may be a better grouping in reality

What if we take the Composite routing that gives us these West holes in order: 6, 7, 10, 11.  6 obviously the same, the questions then are:
do you prefer 7 to 5?
do you prefer 10 to 3?
do you prefer 11 to 4?

I could get behind 10 over 3 and 7 over 5 (that might take a few pots in the clubhouse), but 4 am could roll around and I probably wouldn't take 11 over 4.  Intellectually, 11 tee has a lot to offer, especially relative to 4's flaw and as a mirror to 6's dogleg.  But the 2nd to the 4th: that's one awesome opportunity!

Augusta National #10 - #13

2 strong Par 4's (10+11) one of the best short Par 3's (12) in the world and one of the best short risk reward Par 5's (13) ever designed.  You add to this the history and tradition along with setting including Rae's Creek and its tough to beat!

I know it is not the finest in the world but IMO I would be just fine if the only four holes I had to play were the 12 through 15 at Wolf Run Golf Club.  Faldo stated holes twelve through fifteen were "the most demanding yet fairest of any golf course I've ever seen."   So that has got to say something, even though players make comments like that about every course they like.

I also like Pac Dunes 3 through 6

Faldo was partners with Steve Smyers at the time he was touting Wolf Run.  I bet if you asked him today he might have forgotten all about it.  Those four holes ARE hard, though.

With a healthy dose of bias I'm going to mention 4 holes that probably don't get the recognition they deserve...

4-7 on Sunningdale New.

4 is an uphill 440 yard par 4 which plays into the prevailing wind and is, in my opinion, the hardest hole on either course at Sunningdale.

5 is a 180 yard downhill par 3 and is a picture postcard hole where you have to hit the green.

6 is a reachable dogleg right par 5 with a two tiered green and trouble on all sides. It also offers some stunning views.

7 is a short par 4 with a small green which offers relief after the previous three holes, but it is driveable in the summer.
