Keystone, CO courses recommendations please...

I'll be in Keystone for one week this summer, and I'm looking to play a couple of courses.  Any recommendations?

Several years ago, I played at Keystone Ranch, a RTJ jr, course.  Very picturesque, nice roll to the property and playable.  Doak's 'Confidential ...' gives it pretty good marks.

Take a ride west on I70 to Lakota Canyon. If you haven't played an Engh course, this is a must play.

Red Sky Ranch Norman Course is another good course nearby.

I always preferred to play the Breckenridge muni course to the Keystone resort courses personally.  The ball flies forever up there.

Mitchell:

The Raven at Three Peaks in nearby Silverthorne is worth playing.  I agree with Brad regarding Breckenridge Golf Club being better than any of the Keystone courses.  Don't waste your time playing the course at Copper Mountain.

If you are willing to drive 45 minutes toward Vail, the Norman Course at Red Sky is worth playing.  I am not a huge fan of any of the courses at Cordillera.

CC of the Rockies in Edwards or Avon is a good effort from Nicklaus and worth playing if you can arrange it.

If you are willing to drive 90 minutes, Lakota Canyon in New Castle is perhaps the best course (along with Red Sky Ranch) in the area.  As an added bonus, the drive through Glenwood Canyon is extremely scenic.

As a general rule you will want to play in the mornings as afternoon showers and thunderstorms can be quite common in the summer.

I will second the Raven at Three Peaks and I also believe that Pole Creek is not too far from there, 27 holes of great golf.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

What's the approximate season in that area, anyway?

+/- Memorial Day to the end of September/early October. Some courses are open earlier (eg Eagle Ranch in Eagle is opening shortly) but that 's the safest time. Fall is gorgeous up there.

I too prefer Breckenridge GC (27 holes) to the Keystone courses. Lakota is a day trip if you intend to play there; worth seeing if you haven't played a Jim Engh course and have the time. The back nine at the Raven at Three Peaks is pretty good; I'm not crazy about the front nine. Both Breckenridge and the Raven are close to Keystone.

I should have asked beforehand, but is that something like 7000-8000 feet elevation?

Was in Aspen once in late Sept., and yeah, it was stunning.

Thanks Doug.

More like 8,000-9,000 feet. I think Breckenridge is at 9,600 feet; Vail is at 8,100.

Just arrived home from a week spent in Keystone, Colorado.  On the way out, we stopped at Dismal River and played 36 holes and then while in Colorado I played 45 holes at The Raven at Three Peaks, in nearby Silverthorne.  Thanks for the recommendations, as I found The Raven a lot of fun and in great condition.  The staff is very professional and extremely accommodating in every regard.  I really like their approach as this semi-private club offers guests.  "All inclusive" greens fees includes cart (w/ gps), meals (breakfast & lunch), snacks, and bottled water or other non-alcoholic drinks.

The Raven is a lot of fun, and quite challenging.  The back 9 really gets it going as things get really good on #11 and strong holes continue all the way to the finishing 18.  The Black tees play 7400 yards, but the course is at over 8000 feet so the ball really flies up there.  The #9 par 4 is 519 yards but actually plays medium length as it's a big drop down---I think the longest club I hit into the hole was a 7 iron (from about 195 yards).  This was the first Lehman designed course I've played, and I feel it was very good golf architecture.

Dismal has been discussed on this site extensively in other threads.  While I prefer Sand Hills over Dismal, I will say that Dismal exceeded my expectations.  It's a bit "extreme" (similar to The Castle Course in St. Andrews), and will probably receive further "softening" of some green complexes in the future.  The area has received extensive rainfall this season, and the course played quite soft and would be even more enjoyable when the turf firms up.

Thanks again for the advice, as The Raven ended up being my course of choice in the Keystone area.  I liked it so much I didn't venture to any other course, but instead focused my efforts on posting a respectable score at The Raven.
