I was at Silloth on Sunday for the first time since 2007 and was surprised to see an entirely new green for the par 5 fifth. I hadn't planned on taking any pictures so apologies for the poor quality of this phone snap:
The old green was a little closer to the tee and a little further from the beach, roughly in the middle of the picture above.
Here's a snap of the NLE old green:
I liked the old green, which was smaller, with a fairly narrow open entrance at the front so it was possible, though not necessarily wise, to go for it in two in suitable conditions.
The two bunkers fronting the new green make it impossible to run the ball on and implausible, for 99% of golfers, to carry them and still stop a long second shot on the green.
I don't know the rationale for building a new green (anybody know?) but as an occasional visitor regret the loss of the old green.
Now the work has been done, filling in the more central of the front bunkers would restore the options for the approach shot.
