Last day in Scotland

Need some advice!

2nd trip to Scotland this coming Sept. Flying out of Edinburgh on Sunday after driving down from Inverness on Fri/Sat. Was hoping for a final round on TOC on Sat afternoon via ballot or walk on but just found out that the R&AGC has the Old and New essentially closed for Town Match finals. Big Bummer.

Just me and a buddy as a 2 ball...Wives will be amusing selves elsewhere while we play.

I've played TOC on first trip, buddy hasn't.

Would still like to get in a last memorable round in Edinburgh area.

Already have played Kingsbarns but nothing else in the region.

Thinking North Berwick or Gullane??

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Chris

It's hard to pass up a round at North Berwick!

I'm with Bill - it's difficult to pass on an opportunity to play North Berwick.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

North Berwick also has the advantage of being close to Edinburgh and the airport.  What time's your flight?  8)

Chris

If you are trying to get a round on a Saturday afternoon then you might struggle as most courses are members courses and will have restricted access to visitors on that day.

A safe bet would be either No 2 or No 3 at Gullane. Can't see you getting on No 1 and in any case No 1 doesn't justify the additional cost over the other two courses. Both 2 and 3 go over Gullane hill so you will get terrific views. Also both courses are great fun, 3 is shorter but not necessarilly all that easier. You need to get your approach angles right.Great turf and probably the most consistently good greens I play in Scotland.

Other courses that you might get on late afternoon/early evening would be Kilspindie nr Gullane which is old fashioned links ie short with small greens and tight lies. Interesting clubhouse as well. Room with bay window overlooking last green doubles as locker room and bar. The second course at North Berwick called the Glen also is worth a go and has some really memorable holes.

I nominate Crail Balcomie, Elie, Scotscraig, and Lundin Links as all great options.

The views from Gullane 1 and to some degree Gullane 2 would make me put them just behind N Berwick. To me Gullane 1 and N Berwick are a coin flip.

Nothing will be better than be picked up by Muldoon at 5:30, from David Tepper's flat in Dornach (which is the golfing spot in the world of the game, not just the course - David's place!), and a Mercedes ride to Brora.

Thanks you guys, and GCA for finding such fine friends.

My vote would be for North Berwick as well.
Gullane is good. Berwick is great.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the info. You've all confirmed my hunch that N Berwick was the definitive choice! Now gettiing on will be the issue.  Their website didn't specifically address weekend visitor restrictions but I'll try a call tomorrow and see if I can get a time. I think if TOC is out NB will serve as a great substitute to put the whipped cream and cherry on my Scotland sundae.

I'm sure others will beat me to it but I'll try and provide some early details on 2 of the new courses- we're playing Mach Dunes and the old M early in the trip, and then Castle Stuart and Dornoch twice before heading back down south. Should be fun! Thanks again.

As a committed links golfer this will be a left field suggestion. Driving past Edinburgh to N Berwick is a bit of a trek. I'd consider Blairgowrie for something different. It's just off the main road from the North and a great golf course, visitors permitted after 2pm on a Saturday and the village is worthy of the ladies time in the afternoon.

I'd play an early morning round on the Eden and then spend an hour or two wandering around the Old and watching how the local golfers play the course in a competition.  The Eden is as interesting as any of the other courses already mentioned, and your buddy (and you) would get a chance to see the Old in a very interesting light.  If you're lucky maybe one of the geezers wil invite you into the R&A clubhouse at the end... ;)
