Peter,

Thanks for your concern.  I made it through a little wet, but otherwise unscathed and impressed.  My hypothesis was proven correct upon seeing CG.  I think we have a model for the "new" public golf.  It seems that my day in Holyoke piqued all of your interests in this new and exciting venture in Colorado.  I am looking forward to compiling the the pics tomorrow and posting on the course.

Doug,

Please count me in for any GCA outing at CommonGround.  I haven't played it yet (I was out of the country recently) but I'm very much looking forward to it.

BTW, thinking of the comparisons between a Murphy Creek or Buffalo Run, Buffalo Run was in horrendous shape when I played it last month--lots of bare spots and ground under repair--it was rough.

I made my maiden voyage around CommonGround yesterday and, on behalf of Denver public golfers, I'd like to say thank you to Tom D and his team.  What a treat.  I expected good things from Renaissance, but my expectations were tempered by my memory of Mira Vista and by Tom's own statements.  I was blown away by the course as a whole.  Yes, it's subtle (for the most part), but there are a lot of really cool features there.

Some random thoughts:  I really like the bunkering, often a low-profile cut in the fairway; the greens exceeded my expectations, both in the amount of contour and in the variety of sizes, angles, etc,; I thought I saw some MacRaynor-like features around some greens, but perhaps my imagination ran wild; and the conditioning of the course, including the greens, was excellent.  Best of all, the course is unique.  I can't think of a course, certainly not around here, that looks anything like it.  It has some links-like characteristics in a parkland setting.  And it's made for walkers.

There are a few places around the greens that seem to call for some shots along the ground that are made hard to execute because the fairway grass is a little long.  One place I'm thinking of is the area left of #7 (I love the tie-in to #8 tee there).  That could be due to the heavy amount of rain we've had here or perhaps one can't mow it too closely because of the grass or type of course (I'm speculating).  The other question mark I had was with regard to some of the humps in the fairways that were left as rough, as hazards (e.g., on #8).  I like the idea of a non-bunker hazard, but I didn't love the look of some of those humps--maybe they will grow on me.

As far as holes that made an immediate impression, I noticed #2, #4, #7, #8, #11 and #16.  I played the last few holes in the twilight/darkness so I need another look at the back 9, in particular.  Another surprise was just how good the views are--we had lovely views of the Denver skyline and expansive views of the Front Range; the views are much better than at City Park, for example, which aren't too shabby.

To me, CommonGround jumps right to (or, at the very minimum, near) the top of the list of Denver public courses, surpassing the likes of Murphy Creek, Buffalo Run and Fossil Trace, and possibly Riverdale Dunes as well.  I have a new home course.

I've been threatening to set up a round at CommonGround. I've now done so with the able assistance of CG head pro and fellow GCAer David DeMartino. I have times around 1 pm on Wednesday July 8. One impetus for this is that GCAers Ash Towe, in from New Zealand, and Ed Getka, from California, will be in town that evening. Unfortunately, they don't arrive early enough to join us for a round but would like to have drinks/dinner. My plan would be for as many of us who are available to meet up with Ash and Ed after our CG round, at around 6 pm for dinner.

If you are interested and available for either or both of CG golf and dinner with Ash and Ed on July 8, please let me know. Thanks.

Can I also give a shout out for the CommonGrounds yardage book? Detailed straight overhead pencil drawings with 50 yard line horizontal markers stretched out over two flip pages. THE BEST yardage book I have ever seen.

Richard:

I will make sure Don sees that, since he doesn't tune into here often.  He did the yardage book for Stone Eagle too, and I love that one as well.

I ought to include the yardage book as part of all our contracts, but if I do so at the front end, no one wants to pay extra (on top of our exorbitant design fees) for the yardage book.  Now that we've done a couple maybe I can convince them, but it's easier on the back end, except by then some of the courses have already hired somebody else for it.

TD, please do. I really liked the yardage book and I even showed it to the pro at Ballyneal because they said they were trying to hire someone to do a yardage book.

If you can get Don's OK, I can post sample copies so that people here can see what I am talking about.

It looks like the yardage book sketches are on the commonground hole-by-hole tour on their website.

http://www.commongroundgc.com/tour.aspx

I believe Don did the fabulous sketch of the Ballyneal routing that is also on their website.  Seems like you're 80% there with a yardage book, just add those 50-yard lines and maybe some indication of the green slopes.  I would be all in favor of upgrading the current BN yardage book.

Doug - trying to get free.....will let you know over wkend.

And to Doug's point, CG is a course that you want to play again as soon as you're finished.  As Doug has clearly described the course, I won't repeat.  The third shot (if you so desire or need) on 18 is a bit awkward for a finishing hole as previously discussed, but you'll get over it as soon as you hit your next tee ball on #1.

Buffalo Run doesn't come close to CG.  And MC will always be a solid course.  But many must remember what CG was (Mira Vista).  What the Gents in the picture above accomplished........(and at a price point that, while argued for a bit, leaves plenty for the 19th hole)...........is remarkable.  The green complexes alone will make a player want to return.  Their design actually gives hope to the future of affordable, high quality golf.

I have pics of all 18 that I can post (as Doug was ever patient w/ me during the round), but I'm sure the others that have recently played will do a better job.

Now if we could only get them to take on Wellshire............

I played CG this past Monday in my first Section event of the year.  Had a ton of fun!  Will definitely be back again.

A couple of thoughts:

- I really enjoyed the routing of the course.  We took carts but it has to be a great walking course.  My one gripe here is that there are some areas where you could very easily see someone getting hit by an errant shot.  17 tee has got to see some golf balls from 18 tee.
- The green settings are wonderful.  Puts a premium on well placed shots.  You could hit 18 greens here and shoot 80.
- A number of very well placed bunkers.  Doak gives you many options off the tee and the width to the holes will make you think about where you want to place your tee shot.
- There is a good mix of long and short holes.  You will hit every club in the bag.
