Aerial of the Day #95 (and 96) - 10 May 2002

I had told a few people that I was going to take a break from
AOTD for two weeks starting after next week, as I'd be on
vacation for 7 weekdays and I had something important at
work for the two days after I came back.  I've decided to
start a week earlier,  starting after today, because I
need to get some important work done to prepare for after
vacation.  Someone had volunteered to take over for the two
weeks he knew about, but hasn't been around lately as I
know something important came up in his life.  So there
might not be any until June 3.

To pass the time for up to 3 weeks, here's one to cruise over:



And a supposedly underrated stumper that might have kept
you turbo-charged for awhile had this been in summer and in
color:

I'm rather surprised that only one person has made a comment on #1.

#2 is probably in the top 5 courses the architect has built,
though that's not saying much.  It's still supposed to be
a "lesser-known" gem.  A GCAer hails from there.

I think I have the second one, but I'll have to check with my buddy Brett Favre, errr I mean Darryl.  I think he is milling around here somewhere.

I'm aghast that no one else has anything to say about #1,
which actually gets discussed here quite often (maybe that's
why).  I will be leaving (and thus revealing) early today, so
make your comments/clues now!

How about that 16th hole!  The architect's fave!

That 18th green sure is sloped and difficult!

How about that awesome and difficult #11!

Is that the archtitect's former residence on the 6th hole?

Boy, that #7 sure is narrow!


As for #2, this course resides in a state that has had 4
AOTDs already.

It also resides in a town Slick Willie would be proud to call
his own.  I suppose Harry Callahan, too.

Scott - I didn't say anything re #1 because I figured no matter what I said I'd give it away. It's only slightly close to my heart.  GREAT pic - I've never seen it in an aerial.

#1 was obviously taken before some
of the restoration work was done.  
There are definetely less bunkers on
#10 and #15 than there are currently.  
No wonder I can never hit #7 fairway,
it doesn't appear to be there!  What a
great aerial.

I have no idea about #2.

#7 on #1 isn't quite as narrow as it looks, because the sun is
in the west, making shadows in the middle of the fairway.  
#3 on Astoria is still the king of narrow.

It's still an iron off the tee, though.


For #2, if you have a BMW Z3, chances are it was built near here.

For #2, our resident GCAer with the Daly-esque swing and
length (not the young Aussie) played college golf not far
from here.

#1 of course is MacKenzie's Pasatiempo, in Santa Cruz, CA.
So much has been said, I'll not say more.

clues include:

"pass the time" is what Pasatiempo translates to from
Spanish.

"cruise" = Cruz

Dick mention Santa, as in Cruz.


#2 is Musgrove Mill, in Clinton, SC, by Arnold Palmer's
design team, and home club of GCAer "Turboe", Daryl Boe.  
It has a bunch of sandy waste areas not apparent in this
photo, and is highly regarded amongst those who have
played it.

clues inclue:

turbo-charged referred to Turboe.

"milling around" = Mill

4 past AOTDs in SC are:  The Ocean Course, Caledonia,
Yeamans Hall, Dunes G&BC.

Clinton=town Slick Willie would be proud to call his own.  
also=Clinton Eastwood, who played "Dirty" Harry Callahan.

"king" = Palmer, "see"=Palmer's right hand man Ed Seay,
who is the man responsible for Musgrove Mill.  Arnie's
contribution was apparently flying over the site, or
something to that effect, according to Turboe.  (I could be
wrong)

All (I think) BMW Z3 Roadsters in the U.S. are built in the
BMW plant between nearby Greenville and Spartanburg.

Daly-esque Matt Ward played college golf at nearby USC (the
other one), who have bumper stickers that claim that "No
one can lick our 'Cocks".

Pasy aerial looks like it's taken mid-restoration by Doak, with some stuff showing (#9 fairway bunker, #12 greenside bunkers...I think), but some not up to date (#10 greenside bunkers, et al.)

Unbelievable how bad the "tightness" looks in #6-8 and #1, 9, driving range.  Perhaps a reason to avoid parallel routing if given the choice.  You can't live forever to tell them not to plant those trees.  Safety setbacks of centerlines are ever-increasing, as well, giving the club a reason for such in some circumstances.

That takes care of the closest course to my house that will ever be shown.  One thing that the aerials point out is how screwed up I am regarding directions that holes run.  If someone had asked me, I would have sworn that 9 and 10 ran generally the same direction.

Regarding irons on #7, I saw the college players driving the green during last years Western Intercollegiate Championship.  Scary to even think of.

Thanks for the aerial of Musgrove.  Sorry I was out of pocket for the last couple weeks and wasnt here to participate in the clue dropping.  I also wish the aerial was in color (in season) as I think the contrast between the green and sandy waste areas would have been interesting to see from that vantage.  I will have to check to see if i can find any further aerials of MMGC.

ps you are right on this being exclusive factory for all BMW Z3/M3 Roadsters also only place the X5 SUV is built is at that factory.
