A lot of the ferries have room for cars -- but it adds to the cost, and you often need advance reservations to make sure they room for your car. At least that's how Cal-Mac runs; it's easy to do, but it tends to make one fit your golf schedule around the ferry schedule if you're doing a lot of island hopping via ferry with a car. (e.g., you can get from Ardrossan, near Troon and the other Ayrshire links, to the Isle of Arran, and from Arran to the Kintrye Peninsula and on down to Machrihanish, but it won't save you any time -- I'm pretty sure it's quicker just to drive from Troon the long way around to the Kintyre peninsula.)

Yeah, I got the impression from the link above that this was a boat with room for golfers and their clubs vs. the giant ferry like the ones to Arran that can take cars.

The Kintyre Express is just a passenger boat, and not a very big one at that.  95% of their services are for golfers and so they arrange for transfers to and from the golf course on the other end.

Phil is right about the ferry services to Arran and then to the Mull of Kintyre on the other side.  It's faster to drive around, unless you're starting right in Ardrossan and your timing is PERFECT.  But if you are not trying to cram in 10 golf courses in 8 days, Arran is a beautiful place to linger en route.

IMO a big luxury hotel misses what Machrihanish and the surrounding area are all about.

How long does the Kintyre Express to get there? The boat doesn't look overly large, is it choppy at all during the actual transport? What are the max number of passengers that can fit with clubs?

Niall -

I have not traveled on the Kintyre Express. As Tom Doak mentioned, I believe they arrange for ground transport for you from Campletown to Machrihanish.
Their website should have info about that.

Interesting tidbit from the MD web site is that trolleys are not allowed on the course, as it is a Site of Special Interest.  Carry or caddie only.

"It was true, but we’ve recently been allowed to use trolleys.   We need to update the website." From Kevin Lewis GM at Mach Dunes 2 minutes ago.
