ANGC, The Masters and the nostalgia factor
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:17:59 PM »
I heard Chamblee make an interesting comment this evening that I myself had never considered. He mentioned that the course no longer allows for the nostalgic win, such as Crenshaw in '95, Jack in '86 and Player in '78, and it was a shame because perhaps then Norman might actually have somewhat of a chance. Norman's chances aside, I think he's right and I think it is/was a huge factor in why the toonamint was so special to watch. Will we ever see another nostalgic win with the way the course is set up now?

I understand the point, but I don't fully agree.

Wouldn't you say that Fred Couples still has a chance to compete?  I would deem that nostalgic.  I'm not convinced that Norman has any less of a shot here than he did at the British Open last year.  It all depends upon which game he brings this week.

Similar to BC's sentimental win and tribute to Harvey Pennick, one of the Spaniards winning in tribute to Seve would be touching.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Jack Nicklaus, at 46, is the oldest winner of the Masters. I imagine there are several golfers about that age who are fully capable of winning the Masters - Vijay Singh and Kenny Perry come to mind. Fred Couples was in the last group at the Masters on Sunday at age 46 or so just a few years ago. Beware of generalizations! ;)

Everyone would have said that Jack had no shot in '98, but if a few putts went in he might have done it.

Obviously Jack would have no shot today, but someone older than the 46 year old Nicklaus who won in '86?  Absolutely.  If not Norman since he's psyching himself out of it before he starts, how about Freddie?  He played pretty well for 69 holes, if the wind blows a bit and he makes a few putts look out!
