If Muirfield were created today
« on: April 07, 2009, 07:44:20 AM »
Following on the St. Andrews theme,

If Muirfield were created today, I doubt people would coall it great golf architecture, even though, on the ground its as close to a perfect design effort as it can possibly be...

The clockwise / counterclock wise wouldn't be an innovation
Lack of pretty visuals
No use of the water view etc.
No dramatic

Muirfield is about a piece of ground devoted to the game

it wouldn't be in the top 100

Philippe,

Muirfield as it is played today is less than a hundred years old.  Even if it was built tomorrow on that site it would still (IMHO) get in the Top 100.
Bunkers, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded, and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored - John Low Concerning Golf

Brian, don't you feel people would call it too tame, too undefined... whatever that means

Maybe it would creep its way in the top 100 after 8 - 10 years... but I doubt that raters who would have played the course once or twice would go... man this is top 50 or top 100 in the world... Muirfield is too subtle it seems.

The thing is, Muirfield is the proof that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I would put it in the top 100, but most won't I feel...

We could get this exercise going forever, what do you think people would say about Lytham and St.Annes, would that make the top 100????
