Would you do it?
« on: April 02, 2009, 06:52:12 PM »
Recently I was having a discussion with a friend about my upcoming vacation.  On one particular day my plans are to get up at 4:30 am, drive 3 1/2 hours to course A, play at 8 AM, then drive 3 hours to Course B, for a 2:30 PM tee time, then drive 4 1/2 hours back to my hotel.   Both courses are top 5 in the state and in Golfweek's top 100.  My friend said I was crazy and nobody else in the world would do that.

So here is my simple question:  Would you do it?

I should add that this is a state I have never been too and am not likely to go back to anytime soon.

which courses are they?

IT DEPENDS on that and if I thought I'd get another crack at one of them if I didn't do it.

Cory,

I've done crazier things and would do it again.   No question.

Never regretted a moment of it either.

Cory,

How fast are you going to play your first round....? You are cutting it close to say the least.

  Cory,

If you are 30 years old or younger......single.......bored......have no children........can play with John Kavanaugh.......live in California......recently divorced.......have already filed your taxes....or two of the above then by all means get in the car and sieze the day!!!

Absolutely.  I'm good for 1-2 trips where my wife says, "I knew you were dumb, but I didn't think you were stupid" each year.

It's definitely not for everyone, but a good road trip is good for the golfing soul.

I'd do it in a flash...but I fit into quite a few of Anthony's categories.

Well's let's see:  30 years or younger, bored, have no children, recently divorced, already filed taxes.  That's 5, I guess I qualify!  Almost six, I think Kavanaugh was in the group behind me in the first Dixie Cup.

Sounds excessive to me, and the highlight of my golf CV in this regard:

15 rounds on 15 never-before-seen-courses in 9 days, with 1,000 miles of driving, and long nights writing book chapters until midnight or later....

Sounds like a sound and perfect plan.

I once woke up in Indy, played a Pete Dye public in town, drove to Terre Haute played another 18 at Hulman Links, and drove home to St. Louis.

The following I did post age 30, post marriage, post kids:

A few years ago I drove the 90 miles to Boston after work to a friend's house, and we woke up the next morning at 4:00 am to tee off at George Wright at sunrise (and thus play under 4 hours).  Another time drove 2.5 hours to watch the semi-final matches of the US Am at Winged Foot and then drove the 2.5 hours back in time for dinner.  I also once stopped to play 18 in Columbia, MO during a single day drive from Omaha to St. Louis.  Finally spent all morning & most of afternoon watching US Open 1st round at Bethpage, and drove back to Springfield, MA that evening getting home before sunset (and this included driving on the LI Expressway).

Now I could not do your plan everyday for a week, but for one day, to play 2 courses, no problem.  And in a state you may not re-visit, no question.

Neither one is in the current Golf Digest Top 100, but I'm told they both have outstanding architecture.

absolutely!

a related story- last year Kyle was visiting me ...my wife joined our talk and she started telling Kyle how i recently drove 6 hours to play, played, and drove back, all in the same day...she told Kyle "Isn't he nuts?"

Kyle didn't miss a beat: "Whats wrong with that?"

well done Kyle! (and all you others on this thread...i'll make sure my wife reads it!)
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

No. But you go right ahead.

I like AG's criteria, that pretty well sums up all of the factors that would permit you to do this craziness.

Sounds like my kind of day trip, though I second the other comments on timing.  Unless you have enough local knowledge to know you will be playing alone at 8 or that the pace of play is 3 hours, you are cutting the day awfully close and risk missing out on the afternoon round.

Are you driving alone or with a co-pilot?
Does any amount of caffeine help you?
Are they or are they not top 100 courses?
Is a time zone-change involved?

Yes.

This summer I walked 36 in Chicago (Shoreacres/Chicago G.C.), left Chicago G.C. at 5:00 in Friday rush hour, drove to Chattanooga, got in at 3:30 a.m. Walked 36 next day (Black Creek/Honors) with a morning tee time of 7:30.

God, I'm getting tired just reading all of this. But then I did just turn 30. (And I'm married, with 2 kids... and it's been about a decade since I've listened to Snoop Dogg.)

Do it. Please tell us what courses they are though, just curious.

One monday a summer ago I slept in my car with a buddy, teed off on the black at 6:00am, was off the course at 10:00, back driving home at 10:30, arrive in boston at 2:30ish, decide I want to play more golf and drive over to TCC for an afternoon caddy round. I was in bed and PASSED out at 6:30.
