This golfer is 6'4"--There is a good 7-8 feet of left-to-right movement on this green.  Also, it is a front-to-back green that goes very well with the lay of the land.

Have always enjoyed Triggs.  Pictures look great, and while tees, fairways and greens are in very good shape, pictures even look better!  Traps could use some work as could the rough.  Tends to play longer than the scorecard reads.  Greens are quick and slope back to front so keeping the ball below the pin is essential.  Fairways wide but its all about angles.

Most prefer Shennecossett, another Ross design about an hour away, but I've always enjoyed Triggs a bit more.  Both excellent Ross munis.  Also, a bargain for New England golf.  Currently off season rates at $20.

Here are five images from today (April 1, 2009) at Triggs.  The weather was brutally cold, yet the Triggs faithful were banging it around without benefit of booze or other warming devices.  The first image is the third shot into a par five, focusing on the bunkering.  The second shot is the drop-shot 14th hole, protected in front by a wall of bunkers.  The third is a heroic, short par four (there are four shorties at 350 or less at Triggs).  The forth is evidence of Ross' gift for wrinkling fairways.  The fifth demonstrates Ross' deception with short fours...drive it long enough, get around the corner and have an unimpeded look at the green.  Of course, those trees might have been saplings when he built the course!

Last two photos (I shot a total of 99 and chopped it down to the lucky seven).  The first one here is the 17th hole tee shot.  Only 410 yards, you have to get it far enough up the fairway to the flat or the right to left lean of the terrain will drag you down into no-man's land.  The second shot is Ross' deception again, loading up the bunkers, yet leaving space between them and the putting surface, the optical illusion trick.  I'd love to come back in the Summer and take a whack at this gem.  6500 yards from the tips, par fives at 445, 462, 508 and 523, par fours at 319, 327, 341, 350, 402 (twice), 410, 412, 425, and 457, and par threes at 158, 191, and 200 (twice).  Decent variety, although I'd like to see one of the 200s up around 225 and the 191 back to about 175, for par three balance.

Well, it is a shortish course, so the defense of par is helped somewhat by the need to shape a few shots.  While I didn't feel so cloistered by the trees, there were no leaves on the branches.  I guess I can see why you might call for your Poulin.

Here's another confirmation of Triggs as a cool, low-key Ross that is one of the few of this type in Southern New England (more up north in NH, VT, ME).

I remember a semi-tough start of a couple long par fours, but you can get those early strokes lost back on the short par 5s.

Some bunkering help would make the course look amazing and could make it challenge NN for the title of top public in RI without issue.  However, it still is a treat at $20, $30, or whatever they charge in season.

The 15th hole is the only one where the trees are a major issue.  The left trees on 16 appear to be part of the strategic nature of the hole.  It is an almost drivable par 4 for the longer hitter, but the trees must be carried if the ball is going to make the green area.  The approach from the right offers the best angle to a very severe green.  INCIDENTALLY, I'll take this course over quite a few of the current Golf Digest top 100 courses!

When I played Triggs a couple of years ago, I only remember a couple of areas where trees were a major factor.  For the most part, the course does not feel claustrophobic.
