NCAA Final Four...GCA matchups
« on: March 30, 2009, 11:14:27 AM »
Well since my Sparties knocked Lousiville in the mouth yesterday and showed everybody why we've made more final 4's, elite 8's and sweet s16's than any team in the last 11 years I thought I'd start a fun post comparing the 4 different states that each of the final four teams represents in a GCA matchup.

So, how would they stack up?  My initial thoughts are that it would be Michigan State (representing Michigan) vs. Villanova (representing Pennsylvania)...but what do you all think?

So, here's my MICHIGAN starting lineup and 7 reserves (only 12 to a team).

Starters:
Crystal Downs
Kingsley Club
Arcadia Bluffs
Greywalls
Oakland Hills

Reserves:
Lost Dunes
Dunes Club
Forest Dunes
Franklin Hills
Tullymore
Indianwood (old)
Eagle Eye

A deep team...a lot of veterans and some young studs!

Michigan Red Shirts/Practice Squad

Detroit Golf Club
Country Club of Detroit
The Gailes
Angels Crossing
University of Michigan (seems to be a crime putting them in this list though)

I think North Carolina could field a pretty good in-state team.  Other's need to chime in, but off the top of my head (courses I'm personally familiar with):

Pinehurst No. 2
Quail Hollow Club
Pine Needles CC
Linville GC
Charlotte CC

Bench (several of which I know only by reputation):

Tobacco Road
Old Town Club
Forest Creek GC North
Sedgefield CC
Wade Hampton Club
Grandfather G&CC
Tanglewood Park (Championship Course)

California will be a tough team to take down, and I'm sure many will disagree over which courses make the roster, probably even forgot a great one:

Starters:
Cypress Point
Pebble
SFGC
Riveria
Valley Club of Montecito

Bench:
Cal Club
Olympic Lake
Spyglass
LACC
PasaTiempo
MPCC Shore
MPCC Dunes

Water/Towel/Ball Boy:
The Ranch

My bad, I didn't read Brians original post closely enough.

Is a Cali team in the NIT final 4.  ;D

I've never played CC of Detroit but for the Gailes and Angel's Crossing I could see them being the 12th man.  However, Detroit Golf Club would not make the squad.

It appears California may be the winner despite not making the Final Four. ;D

I guess if my Mizzou Tigers had beaten UConn, we would be expecting a full 40 minutes from St. Louis C. C.

Never played there....is it any good?  The web-site's pictures don't really knock my socks off.

Brian,

The pics are of their "signature" hole, #18. There are probably some who can tell you better than I can, but it is a Colt and Alison golf course that has hosted a PGA and some Western Opens years ago.

I have only played it 3 times, I believe and it has been a while. It isn't Merion, but I certainly wouldn't miss it if I had the opportunity. It is a solid golf course.

Is Nova representing only Philly or the whole state?

Not that it matters against this competition.  ;)

Are we talking the ENTIRE state of Pennsylvania?  If yes, then Oakmont which is 300 miles away from Villanova and Merion would be included.  If just a closer proximity, then Pine Valley could be included since it's only 15 miles from Philadelphia, but not in PA.

I assume you would have to choose a starting 5 from:

Pine Valley
Oakmont
Merion
Aronimink
Lancaster
Rolling Green
Fox Chapel
Susquehana
Huntindon Valley
Lehigh

Inverness is less than 10 miles from the MI border and Chicago Golf is only 80! ;D  I say we steer clear of the semantics and keep it in state as Brian noted.

Looks like hands down Michigan vs Penn in the championship game, however that one is a little more difficult to figure out...

I would grant Villanova our wonderful Oakmont over my dead body after Saturday's game...

This whole competition is moot, anyway, everyone knows Connecticut is the best golf state.

 :P

On a less bitter note, Philly has enough great courses, it doesn't need support from this side of the state.

Anthony:

You're right, that's exactly what's coming. "Nova" is only a couple of miles from Merion as the crow flies and I'm gonna tell you right now that it's about as sure a thing that "Nova" is gonna kick the shit outta those other B-ballers and win the NCAA championship as it was that Tiger was gonna sink that putt on #18 yesterday and win Bay Hill.

;)

This is not me just bragging either. I'm prepared to put my money where my mouth is and bet anybody 400 FARTHINGS that "Nova" WILL WIN IT ALL!!!

And if "Nova" wins it all is there any reason on earth not to conclude that Merion East is the greatest course in the Universe?

Tom Paul,

Your Nova boys have to get past UNC first.  UNC made a very very good Oklahoma team look like a JV team on Sunday. 4 games in and no one has even competed with these guys yet ;)

Yikes, not a lot of love for the Nutmeg State.

Starting Five:
- Stanwich
- Yale
- CC of Fairfield
- Fishers Island (if Oakmont can be included for a Philadelphia team, then so too can Fishers, which is closer to CT than NY anyway)
- Woodway CC

Reserves:
- Round Hill
- Hartford GC
- Bull's Bridge
- Wampanoag CC
- Ellington Ridge CC
- Misquamicut (same kind of idea at Fishers; it's literally hundreds of feet from the CT border)

Kalen:

Who? UNC?? 'Nova is gonna make those clowns look like a bunch of kindergartners. I don't care if UNC suits up the LA Lakers in UNC uniforms, Nova will kick the piss outta them too.

This is inevitable----NOVA already IS the NCAA CHAMPIONS! It's a done deal!!! I'll double it and bet you 800 FARTHINGS!

Hell, I'll bet you 1600 FARTHINGS!!!!
