That area appears to be the dune on the right side of the 1st green on the Red.

Correct. Dune between Red #1 and #4, according to the guy who took the photo I posted.

It wont take long to grow back that is for certain.
I agree that hole is tough, but I think it gets too much critism on here.
Sure it is a par4.5 right off the bat but it really is a good hole, none the less with plenty of room off the tee and a large target of a greensite.

MWP,

I can't think of any other par 4 1st hole where I've hit driver driver uphill...it's a bit much, but it is wide and I love C&C.

How is SS doing this summer with the weather etc...?

Year round golf or not?

It's all about the golf!

William,
Positives:  Courses in good shape, plenty of open tee times, reduced green fees. Negatives: Heat and humidity are brutal, impossible to walk, 36 holes is tough even in a cart.

If you stick with a very early 18 and spend the rest of the day recovering it is doable.

Was anyone really under the illusion that anything but hot and humid would rule the day? If I have to play early am, ride and then "recover" for the rest of the day then I have to take a pass. That said it is way up on my bucket list when the weather is more suitable.

There is a spot on their website to learn about Florida resident rates, but it takes you to the online reservation page.  For some reason it isn't working for me.  (Using Internet Explorer as my browser.)

The forecaddie rate is listed as $80-100 per round, plus gratuity.

So if I have this right....

$75 walking, $50 for second round.  $125 for people in extremely good shape that don't mind walking two rounds in the summer heat.

$100 riding, $120 for my forecaddie, $50 for second round, and $120 for the forecaddie.  If I go down by myself it is $390.  Bring a friend and it is $270 each.

Bring a foursome and it would be $210 each.

I was there in June. Only a few groups out in the morning and then just my group in the afternoon. So few players someone forgot to restock the water coolers on the Blue.  Very uncomfortable. I was praying for a thunder shower!

I'm going to be in Tampa/Clearwater area with the family from July 13-19 and am pondering whether or not to try and obtain a pass from my wife for golf and whether or not to try Streamsong if I play.  Given I'll either be a single or matched up with someone, I'd certainly prefer not to break the bank on my first experience.

If I were to line up a 8:00am-ish tee time on one of the courses, is it unreasonable for a mid 30's guy like myself be able to walk (carry or with push cart) and not be completely worn out?  I'm use to playing and walking/carrying in the Midwest summer heat/humidity on a walkable but somewhat hilly home course.  Is one of the courses more conducive to walking/carrying or walking/push cart than the other?

Both courses have some steep climbs, but overall I think the Blue (Doak) is a bit gentler.

You could do it if you get out 8 or before.  You will likely be a single, so speed of play will help.  I would not want to be out there in the mid day sun.  Make sure you drink a ton of water before teeing off and during the round.

I went out twice in June, took advantage of the free round w gift card purchase. Both days it was moderately busy in the morning and dead in the afternoon.  I walked as usual but it the major humidity hadn't hit yet. Don't think I will be back until September when walking is reasonable again.  The big thing is keeping your hands dry...maybe rain gloves would work?

The courses were in great shape.

Pete,

There is no difference between Florida and Vermont this week. I push carted 9 holes this week with Dylan and just could not keep dry. Grabbed a cart for the back 9 and it was much better. Unfortunately due to the rain the last month, it was cart paths only.....

Rain gloves is a good idea.

I would go off the Blue with first available time.  I think it is a MUCH easier walk.  The weather is no different than a midwest summer day in the mid-90's.  The only difference is the AM dewpoints.

I would forget the push cart and carry.  The sandy transitions make the pushcart cumbersome.

Michael,

I haven't played Streamsong, but I have played golf in Florida in the summer, and there are some important things to consider:

The sun is intense, and the humidity is more intense.  Staying hydrated and relatively cool is vital.  Will you be able to carry enough water/Gatorade?  Will there be enough water for you on the course?

Florida often has thunderstorms that develop (not blow in from somewhere else) in the afternoon, and they can develop earlier than that.  These storms can build quickly, and often have a lot of lightning (St. Petersburg is one of the lightning capitals of the country).  If a storm develops while you're far from the clubhouse, will you be able to get back in time to avoid the lightning?  While carrying your 55-gallon drum of water/Gatorade?  While walking, I've gotten stuck in the rain a few holes away from the clubhouse, and I was blessed that my playing partners had carts and could give me a ride back to safety.

If it were my choice, I'd save the walking for winter.

I played in mid June and the Red was shut down for maintenance. The starter claimed this practice would be common mid-week in the summer. (alternate courses)

My round was interrupted by lightening several times. Plan ahead for weather delays as afternoon storms are highly likely.

I walked and carried my bag. (Blue) My shirt was drenched by the opening tee shot. Good times. I would recommend a cart late June - early Sept.

I finally made it down to Streamsong and played the Blue course (Doak) last Friday. What a treat! The tee sheet was fairly busy through about 10:00 or 10:30 AM. I could not believe how well conditioned the golf course was. It was simply outstanding from tee to green. The mini verde greens are the way to go in Florida. Tom Doak really loaded this course up with some great design features. I really enjoyed the routing which transitioned elevations rarely found in Florida. There was a great mix of holes including par 3's ranging from wedge to full driver for several members of our group. Doak brings you back to the lost art of cross bunkering made famous by Tillie and Ross on the 17th hole. A drivable par four on each nine provided a popular new architecture feature. There is a wonderful mix of short and long holes as well as cape holes and dual fairway options off the tee.

Now the weather report: Needless to say it was hot. Some breezes helped cool us off as did the unlimited supply of bottled water made available throughout the golf course. There is not a shady spot on the entire course except for the shelters and the restrooms. Speaking of which we were warned on numerous occasions to check for snakes prior to settling in. Storms regularly roll through every afternoon so I advise giving yourself time to sit out a delay. We had a 1 1/2 hour delay after completing 15 holes. So we ate lunch and returned to a cooler golf course for the last three holes. Despite the torrential downpour the impact on the conditions was minimal. The course is built on sand and drains extremely well.

At lunch I discovered my first $17 hamburger (Extra for fries) in the clubhouse restaurant. The $8 hot dog is a much better deal... My previous high price was the $15 hamburger at The Oconee Course at the Ritz in Reynolds Plantation, but at least it included a side of fries, slaw or fruit.

Apparently the course has remained busy through June playing between 180-200 rounds on Saturdays. July and August pre bookings are down as expected however the walkup business has been good. Fall pre bookings are filling fast.

Overall thumbs up for the Blue Course. I cannot wait to get back to play the Coore / Crenshaw Red Course!

Looks like a new summer package for a day at Streamsong.  I imagine that the "from $199" rate is for walking and carts/forecaddies are supplemental...

Summer Day Play Package from $199* per person

PACKAGE INCLUDES:
-- 36 holes of golf
-- Breakfast at the Clubhouse

This may sound too bizarre but some pushcarts have umbrella holders. They do look strange but maybe they'd be the answer to surviving a mid-August round on a shadeless gc.
