Cory,

You've done crazier. Both your degrees are proof of that. Also, many of your recent decisions were to be able to do things like this. You're not seeing anything that's really high on your list, are you? Go for it.

Are you driving alone or with a co-pilot?
Does any amount of caffeine help you?
Are they or are they not top 100 courses?
Is a time zone-change involved?

Are you driving alone or with a co-pilot?-  Alone
Does any amount of caffeine help you?-Absolutely, big fan of diet pepsi max and a good trail mix provides lots of energy.
Are they or are they not top 100 courses?-They are both in Golfweek's Top 100 Courses
Is a time zone-change involved?-Nope

Cory,

One day I drove 4.5 hours out to play Montauk Downs, a NY State Park muni course, got caught in traffic on the return home on the LIE behind 2 accidents, got in the wrong lane and came over the Williamson? Bridge into Chinatown Manhattan at around 9pm on a Sunday night, and probably totalled a good 11-12 hours in the car that day.  I'm still glad I did it.

What else ya doing that day?  ;D

Yep, no question, although, I would question my friendship with the person questioning you.

I think that everyone should plan a couple of days like that each year.

Wasn't there a post about this sort of thing a few years back?  I remember reading somewhere about someone who had lots of stories like this.

Absolutely. Until you do that for 4-5 consecutive days I don't think it is excessive. ;D
What courses are you playing and who designed them?

What are the courses???? Is there a specific reason you don't want to let us know?

Why not?

My best was:

1.  Wake up in Ramona, CA at 5:45
2.  Drive to Barona, breakfast, range, 7:10 tee time with Simper, Stamm, Spaulding
3.  Floor it two hours to Palos Verdes
4.  2pm tee time at PVCC
5.  Friday's for dinner
6.  Shower, pack, LAX red eye back to Boston 10PM, arriving at 6:45AM (I don't sleep on planes either)
7.  Got home just time in time to shower and put a tie on
8.  Full day of work 8:30-4:30
9.  Red Sox game
10.  Crash at about 11.

41 hours awake, two rounds, three hours driving, 6 hours flying, 8 hours work, and one Sox game....not bad!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Recently I was having a discussion with a friend about my upcoming vacation.  On one particular day my plans are to get up at 4:30 am, drive 3 1/2 hours to course A, play at 8 AM, then drive 3 hours to Course B, for a 2:30 PM tee time, then drive 4 1/2 hours back to my hotel.   Both courses are top 5 in the state and in Golfweek's top 100.  My friend said I was crazy and nobody else in the world would do that.

So here is my simple question:  Would you do it?

I should add that this is a state I have never been too and am not likely to go back to anytime soon.

Corey

Not a chance in hell I would do something like this.  My rule of thumb is no more time in the car than it takes to play and drink and it has served me well.  I struggle to understand what drives people to do itineraries like this when there is no paycheque at the end of the line because it sure sounds more like work than a holiday.

Have fun!

Sean,

Luckily for you Great Britain is more compact than the US because if I observed your rule of no more time in the car than it takes to play there would be a helluva lot of wonderful golf course experiences and people I would have missed.

For me, it would depend on whether I had a co-pilot (or at least knew I'd have good company at both courses) -- migth not do it if I was going to play solo both times.

Either way, I'd first try to convince my wife that it would be more enjoyable to play a late afternoon round at Course A, drive and stay overnight somewhere near Course B, play Course B in the morning, and then hoof it back to spend the afternoon with the family.

You don't know what you missed by running around.  Its a fickle world we live in, but it must never be under-estimated.
