Interesting GCA Near Hudson NY?

Hi All,

I have traded the Sandbelt of Melbourne for Rockland County New York.  Not the greatest golf trade of my life, and in this current economy perhaps not a great business decision - time will tell.

We frequently visit near the town of Hudson NY for family reasons.  Does anyone know of any interesting public or private courses that are worth visting / discussing membership with in the area?

I would be very thankful for some pointers.

Olde Kinderhook is Rees' best effort that I have seen.

Columbia CC is a 1960's style course in the good but not great category.

Copake Country Club is a must play.
Do a search here.

I always tout Rip Van Winkle Country Club in nearby Palenville.
It's a nine holer that is open to the public. Great features and alot of strategy
with a backdrop of the Catskill Mountains.
Kaaterskill Falls is nearby and not to be missed.

Columbia CC's original 9 holes were built around 1909.  The new 9 holes were added in the 1960's.

Many thanks for the tips.

I have played Columbia CC quite a few times.  It is enjoyable and has a very nice ambience, but the course seems in need of large scale tree removal.  Many of the playing lines / angles are inaccessible due to overhanging limbs and unnecessary trees.  It strikes me that if "Chainsaw Clayton" (Mike Clayton) were let loose a very good golf course would be revealed.

I will look into Copake, Kindehooke and RVW, thanks again for the pointers.

How do I find Scott Wood - IM?

You're only a short drive from the Berkshires, where some fine golf is to be had.  Mostly private but somewhat accessible places like Wyantenuck, Stockbridge, Greenock...  Check us out when you get a chance.

George...try me at scott@metzwood.com.......Columbia is a very sporty course beset by a serious tree "situation" that the members have been unwilling/unable to rectify....lots of options/variety within an hour of Hudson, for most budgets and tastes.... cheers Scott

Spook Rock is in Rockland County, which you should enjoy. I would also suggest going back and finding the thread on the top courses by state listings. Most of the Jersey courses will be closer for you then the NY ones. The Crystal Springs courses should be near by as well.

As for private, there is a huge range of clubs.

At the risk of repetition, thanks to all for your suggestions and advice.  I will connect with Scott over the weekend, and now I have a list of courses to try out.  I intend to play Spook Rock tomorrow, weather permitting.

spook rock is the best of the bunch.  the new pete dye in pound ridge is prob worth seeing, if only for seeing what can be built if one has enough dynamite.

I personally would use your time upstate to build points with the family, and play golf when you get home though....

George - Welcome to Rockland. Attached is a link to photos of a few of the local courses in Rockland, including Spook Rock and Patriot Hills from last November.

Hudson is about 2 hours North of Rockland and there are many courses on the way,  West Point is just a few minutes north of Rockland.  Links @ Unionvale, Branton Woods, Silo  Ridge, are convenient to the Taconic Parkway on the drive to Hudson although still South of Hudson. James Baird State Park has an RTJ course just off the Taconic.   Columbia, Copake and Catskill CCs are the closest clubs to Hudson that I know.

A fun day would be 9 at Rip Van Winkle and 9 down the road in Saugerties at The Lazy Swan. They're night and day apart in looks and feel.

A little further out on in Stamford, NY is Stamford CC. It's an 18 hole course with interesting greens (even has a baby Biarritz at the end of a 430 yard par 4), a couple of reachable par 4s and 5s, good 3s, great views, some quirkiness, friendly folks in the shop (as are the the Smith family who own RVWinkle) as well as on the course, good burgers, etc.. Nice drive through the Catskills getting there

You could even give West Point GC a go. Some great holes, some TOUGH HOLES, and a few silly ones. Great conditions, and fast greens. Open to public with 3 day advance tee times...

My wife's family has property in Stamford. I played Stamford GC a few times, in fact I think they used my pics for their webpage. Fun little course.

Stamford GC (the club, not the course as it is now) is pretty old. I guess the original course was relocated after the original clubhouse burned down. The Catskills "was the place to go" before air travel made Florida and the south more readily accessible. Now, much of the Catskills is kind of rundown. I love New York State (minus NYC)

There are a few other courses around there, but I have not had the time to play them yet.
