Hmmm.... I am not sure if I agree with the #1 (especially after a recent thread).

Shouldn't NY be high up here?

What are your top 10 based on architecture?

Weird list--it seems like its all about public golf, but then it gets into SFGC, Lake Merced and Olympic for San Francisco.

Seems like something around Pinehurst would have to be included, as with Myrtle Beach.

Quick comments ...

Denver most certainly belongs -- the range and affordability of courses is certainly present.

Please drop the emphasis on Atlantic City. There are only a very few layouts worth making a special visit to the area.

No issue with Chicago being mentioned -- but one can make a strong case for places like Pinehurst to be also included. Ditto the Carmel / Monterey area. If SF is included in any listing it's primarily because of the private side of the equation.

why not just list bandon 10 times and be done with it?

San Francisco? then you certainly have to list New York and Philly
heck ,Southampton has as many great private options as San Francisco

What a bizarre list. Just to elaborate on a point above, Monterey is a bigger town than Myrtle Beach, and Monterey County has more people than the MB metro area (which itself includes more than just Horry County). Fwiw, Pinehurst and Moore County are decidely smaller than either.

Given the first sentence of the accompanying article is "Going on a business trip to a big city?," AC and MB are indeed curious inclusions. Maybe AC is intended to cover NYC and Philly?

How about Portland and ABQ instead? Also I assume Orlando was included because hey, there should be a Florida city on the list.

I live in the Chicago area and have played just about every worthwhile club/course here. I have to say what little I've seen in Philly is as good or better than what we have in Chicago. It seems as the topography in Philly is much better than what we have here. WE do have more knowledgable GCA guys though!

As a Chicagoan, I object to being Number 1 at anything!

Heck, we'll take the publicity and we'll put our city up against any other in America when it comes to visiting for a weekend or a week, but the list (like all lists) is a bit suspect.

I remember seeing San Francisco listed as one of the worst golfing cities in another publication within the last 5 years.

I guess it all depends on whether or not you're a public course golfer.

I just find it interesting that on the recent Golfweek "Places you can play" thread, only one of their top 10 courses in the state is near Denver (two, if you can Larkspur as being nearby).

I actually do like a good number of public courses around the town, but it is interesting to contrast the golfweek results with this list.......

Don't forget Columbus with Scioto, Muirfield Village, OSU scarlet, The Golf Club, etc. Ohio is state that has to be top5. Cal, NY, Penn, Ill, would be my other choices in no particular order. Jack

I'm sorry but the best cities in America to find great golf starts with Bandon. Then goes down the coast to Pebble and across the country to Pinehurst.

Many a Bandon thread happens to include the phrase "there's nothing else to do there." Bandon is a great golf destination, but it isn't a great golf *city*.

Kyle, please see my note re private courses. (But yeah, a public-only list wouldn't be bad either.)

Jack, I guess I gave the Ohio spot to Cleveland on the basis of ODGs, but I see your point.

If it's best cities for PUBLIC golf, then Philly shouldn't be anywhere near the top of the list, for the posters who mentioned Philly.

As Kyle stated, Philly area has a number of great private courses.
Great public ones...not so much.

Seems like a pretty half assed effort to put a list together due to the impossible to understand criteria for measurement.

Would agree that the slide shoe nature of the list is proof that the main driver was advertising, not insight.

Ditto the comments on Philadelphia -- great for private but woefully short on the depth of quality public layouts when compared to a range of other key American cities. Denver, to name just one, would trash the City of Brotherly Love on that score.

You can also throw out the Big Apple for the same reasoning.

Good call by those who have inserted Albuquerque into the mix.
