The best architects you've never heard of

We all know who the big boys are, but who would you say are the rising stars of contemporary golf course design?

Architects that the general public hasn't heard of

or

Architects that the general publics and GCA.com is not talking much about.

Ask most golfers to name all the contemporary architects they know and you'll most likely hear:
Tiger Woods
Greg Norman
Rees Jones
Tom Fazio might be a stretch
Pete Dye
and of course Donald Trump ;D

I doubt the list would start by: Tom Doak, Gil hanse and Mike DeVries

I've seen some pics of work by Chip Powell that I like a lot. He mainly works in Florida, from what I can tell:

From Bryan Izatt's recent thread on Powell's Venetian course in Fla:

Guess it depends on how obscure you're thinking..

Ray Hearn really surprised me at Yarrow. Works mostly in the midwest (primarily Michigan), but has courses on the East Coast and Internationally.

There could be thousands of them out there, Brad, but since I've never heard of any of them I must pass over this thread in silence, or as the great man once said....

Mark:

Check out the roster of my former interns.  I think some of them will be really good someday ... if they can survive the downturn in the business, and if they don't mind going to where the projects will happen 10 years from now.

I'm sure there are other associates out there who don't get enough credit for what they do, but they are tough to identify.  The ones who will get mentioned are most likely the ones who are most interested in self-promotion, not necessarily the most talented ... although, it's also the former group who are more likely to make a name for themselves down the road.  And the people who could handicap them best (their bosses) are the least likely to make their picks public, because singling out some would be passing over others, and we want EVERYONE to think they're special while they still work for us.

Me!!! ;D  Could not resist.  It was just too easy....

Joking aside, I hope to be mentioned in a thread like this.... one day!

The bigger names, or the ones consistently producing great quality courses are the ones most likely to get through this crisis.  Guys like me, associates, who work for more established names, are just hoping that the firm they work for will get through the crisis before we can even start thinking about establishing a name for ourselves!

If some of these firms close in the next few months, you will definately have a lot of guys who will become architects you will never hear about!!

While he does get a few mentions here on GCA.com, I've really liked what I've seen and played of John Harbottle.  He's doing some really good stuff IMO.

Despite Yannick receiving two votes, a true consensus is yet to be formed about who deserves the rising star garland.
Also, I think Tom made a good point that many of the best architects you've never heard of are camouflaged by their bosses for political purposes.

I like what I've seen from Drew Rogers who works for Arthur Hills.  His best known work is at Oitavos in Portugal & Newport National in RI.  Olde Stone in Kentucky is also very good.

If you are talking about architects most avid golfers (that aren't on GCA) haven't heard of, what about Mike Young?

John Fought - I disagree based on his limited layouts I have played or seen (ie - I could be wrong)

John Harbottle - I totally agree based on his work that I have played or seen (ie - I am right :) )

I also really like what Mike Nuzzo did at Wolf Point, based on the photos, and I would asssume that aside from the GCA.com faithful he is fairly unknown? No offense Mike, but my assumption is that if you are not on a Top 100 or so ranking you have never been heard of by the masses

Side question - Do the masses really care about an architect if he is not an ex or current pro?

Would ex or current pro architects EXIST if the answer to this was "yes, they care, it's the quality of work that matters"?

Come on, Rob...

Out in the real world Tom Doak might as well be Doak Walker.

OK that's stretching it -success in magazine ratings does give a guy like Doak some name recognition - but it's not THAT much of a stretch.
