I don't think Vardon was overly involved in design. Other than Little Aston his name is associated with a few big name courses such as Sandy Lodge (it had a hey day), Tadmarton Heath, Woodhall Spa, Ganton and Co Down. I couldn't say how much of any of these courses is his except that the LA routing is fairly well intact. I wonder if Vardon had somebody route the course...this could be a Hawtree job in conjunction with Vardon. I suspect the three generations of Hawtrees have touched more course in GB&I than anybody else...
In any case, if you haven't played Little Aston, David, you ought to...its up yer alley. Despite the sometimes heavy handed bunkering the subtlety of the design is the stand out feature. Most will not be impressed by one visit or pix, but that LA easily deserves more time than that.
